Summary:
At Genoptic, you’ll help build real, deployable products by performing detailed circuit design, PCB development, regulatory compliance, and validation testing. This position reports to the Project Team Lead and is primarily focused on Genoptic Energy, contributing to next-generation power systems for renewables, batteries, energy security, and grid modernization, while also supporting energy storage and controlled-environment agriculture technologies. You’ll work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where research transitions into products and solutions, ensure design meets performance, safety, cost and manufacturability.
Responsibilities:
· Perform detailed design of recent products from component level to system level, including selection and design of switching topologies, DC-DC converters, and inverter stages.
· Re-evaluate existing electrical designs, including DC-DC converters, inverters, and protection circuits; and optimize for efficiency, thermal performance, reliability, and cost.
· Perform detailed design of new products from component level (schematics, topology selection, component selection) to system level (architecture, interfaces, protection, thermal) and drive designs from concept to production.
· Design printed circuit boards, including schematic capture, component selection, layout guidance, and design-for-manufacture/assembly (DFM/DFA) considerations.
· Interpret and design to relevant regulatory and safety standards, and support testing and certification activities.
· Lead and support design and validation of lithium battery systems, including protection, measurement,
power conversion interfaces, and integration with control/firmware.
· Provide production support for existing products by qualifying new components and suppliers, implementing design updates, and resolving issues arising from manufacturing, supply chain, or field feedback.
· Assist in the preparation and maintenance of schedules, specifications, bills of materials, and engineering reports for assigned projects.
· Author and maintain product documentation including design concepts, requirements, specifications, design reviews, and validation/verification test plans.
· Apply engineering knowledge across multiple domains - analog, digital, power, firmware interfaces, EMC, safety - to develop robust product architectures that consider regulatory approvals, manufacturability, procurement, and production testing.
· Liaise with suppliers and customers as required to resolve technical issues, clarify requirements, and support design-in or customization.
· Provide engineering support and guidance to other team members in hardware, firmware, test, and operations.
· Collaborate with operations and logistics teams to support product packaging, shipping, and receiving activities to meet production and customer delivery targets.
· Be willing to travel domestically and internationally to support product design, development, deployment, and service activities.
Requirements:
· Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution (or equivalent)
· Proven experience in analog design, design with programmable logic and microprocessors, basic firmware development, power supplies, high current systems, and switching power conversion design topologies.
· 2+ years of product design experience, including design and debugging of printed circuit assemblies (PCAs) and systems.
· 2+ years of lithium battery system design experience (e.g., pack architecture, protection, measurement, power interface, safety considerations).
· Proven experience in analog circuit design, design with programmable logic and microprocessors, basic firmware interaction, power supplies, and high-current systems.
· Experience designing to international EMC and safety standards, including practical layout, filtering, and isolation techniques.
· Experience working with external partners (suppliers, manufacturing partners, certification bodies, or customers).
· Strong troubleshooting skills at board and system level, including use of lab equipment (oscilloscope, multimeter, power analyzer, etc.).
· Ability to interpret and design according to regulatory standards and support test/certification activities.
· Excellent English communication skills, verbal and written; additional languages are an asset.
· Strong organization and project management skills, including ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced product development environment.
· Demonstrated ability and desire to work effectively with a diverse, cross-functional team.
Desired Qualifications:
· Masters in Electrical Engineering or related field.
· 5+ years experience in power electronics design for battery systems, including DC-DC converters, inverters, and battery management interfaces.
· Hands-on experience with switching devices - SiC, GaN MOSFETs/IGBTs - and high-frequency switching topologies.
· Proficiency in simulation tools such as LTSpice, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, or PSpice for power stage modeling and control loops.
· Experience with advanced battery chemistries (e.g., LFP, NMC, solid-state) or energy storage systems (BESS, EV traction).
· Familiarity with grid-tie inverters, PFC stages, or utility-scale power conversion (IEEE 1547, UL 1741).
· Experience leading design reviews, mentoring junior engineers, or owning subsystems through production ramp and field support.
Work Environment:
· Fast-paced, dynamic environment with a focus on innovation.
· Collaborative projects with a creative and purpose-driven R&D; team.
· Full-time position based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with benefits such as medical, dental, group insurance, life insurance, and vision care per company policy.
