REGISTERED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR (RECE) – BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL
Next to Mom Inc.
Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the Director.
Compensation: $28.00 per hour (inclusive of Wage Enhancement).
Shift Structure: Split-shift (e.g., 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM – 5:30 PM, or as operationally required).
Purpose of the Role:
The Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) for the Before and After School program is a strategic leader at Next to Mom Inc. This role is responsible for ensuring that the "bookends" of a child's day—the transition between home, school, and the centre—are safe, high-quality, and seamless. This position solves the challenge of providing stable, professional care during the critical morning and afternoon windows.
It is vital to Next to Mom because it ensures that school-age children remain engaged in a skilled curriculum rather than just "waiting" for transportation, giving parents 100% confidence in our care throughout the entire day.
Key Accountabilities:
Safe Transitions & School Handoffs by:
- Executing Next to Mom’s "No-Fail" arrival and departure protocols, ensuring 100% accuracy in attendance as children move between the centre and school transportation.
- Maintaining strict "Active Supervision" during the high-movement windows of morning drop-off and afternoon bus arrivals, ensuring no child is ever left unattended during a transition.
- Acting as the professional liaison between Next to Mom and school partners or transportation providers to ensure the safe and timely transfer of care for every child.
- Managing "no-show" protocols and emergency contact procedures immediately if a child does not arrive as scheduled from school.
Before & After School Programming by:
- Developing and implementing interest-based "invitations to play" that allow school-age children to transition into their day in the morning and decompress after school in the afternoon.
- Ensuring all programming aligns with "How Does Learning Happen?" and the Next to Mom Program Statement,
moving beyond simple supervision to active pedagogical engagement.
- Utilizing the mid-day block for intentional planning, environmental reset, and creating documentation that shows parents the learning happening during the "gap" hours.
- Designing a classroom environment that is flexible enough to meet the needs of older children (homework support, creative arts, physical literacy) while maintaining the centre’s aesthetic standards.
Operational Compliance & Safety by:
- Performing rigorous daily safety checks of the classroom and outdoor spaces to identify and mitigate risks before the "Before School" children arrive.
- Adhering to all Ministry of Education and Public Health sanitization requirements, ensuring the room is disinfected and "audit-ready" between the morning and afternoon sessions.
- Maintaining accurate, real-time documentation including incident reports, daily health checks, and medication logs to ensure Next to Mom is prepared for unannounced Ministry inspections.
- Proactively managing the classroom to ensure it meets all requirements of the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA).
Professional Partnerships & Communication by:
- Serving as the primary professional face of Next to Mom Inc. for parents during the critical morning drop-off and evening pick-up windows.
- Providing consistent, factual, and warm updates to families regarding their child’s social experiences, school-day transitions, and any daily incidents.
- Working as a unified partner with the Director to ensure that the Before and After School program is fully integrated into the centre’s overall culture and standards.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and professional integrity,
protecting the privacy of our families and the reputation of the centre at all times.
Required Skills & Expertise:
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE).
- Deep understanding of the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) and its application in school-age settings.
- Valid Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check (completed within the last 6 months).
- Ability to manage a split-shift schedule with high energy and professional focus during peak transition times.
Performance Indicators:
- 100% accuracy in all transition and attendance logs (zero "missing child" or "missed hand-off" incidents).
- The Director noting that the room is consistently organized and compliant during unannounced morning and afternoon "spot checks."
- Families reporting a high level of satisfaction with the ease and professional communication of the morning and afternoon transitions.
- Program plans and pedagogical documentation being updated weekly, reflecting the active interests of the school-age group.
