Financial Controller – Construction
CPA Required | Construction Accounting Experience Required
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Financial Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for a multi-company construction group.
The successful candidate must have previous accounting or finance experience within a construction, contracting, or project-based organization. We are specifically looking for someone who understands the financial side of construction, including job costing, WIP, project profitability, progress billing, holdbacks, inventory, intercompany accounting, and cash-flow management.
This is an accounting leadership position and does not require construction trade or field experience.
The right person will be comfortable working at both a detailed and strategic level—ensuring the accounting records are accurate while also understanding the bigger financial picture and providing meaningful information and recommendations to management.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow statements.
- Provide monthly financial reporting and analysis to management on the overall financial position and performance of the group.
- Oversee and analyze construction job costing, WIP, project profitability, cost-to-complete, and job-cost variances.
- Identify margin erosion, cost overruns, and financial issues early and work with management and operations on corrective action.
- Develop, monitor, and analyze budgets and financial forecasts.
- Manage cash flow and assist with short- and long-term financial planning.
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, job costing, allocations, and month-end processes to ensure they are completed accurately and on time.
- Oversee progress billings, holdbacks, construction receivables, and project-related costs.
- Manage inventory accounting, valuation, and related financial controls.
- Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls to safeguard company assets and reduce financial risk.
- Manage monthly intercompany accounting and reconciliations across multiple companies and divisions.
- Work closely with operations, estimating, project management, and senior management to understand and improve financial performance.
- Support pricing, capital expenditures, investments, and other business decisions through financial analysis.
- Coordinate year-end financial statement preparation with external accountants and provide all required documentation and working papers.
- Maintain working knowledge of corporate tax, GST, payroll requirements, and other applicable financial obligations.
- Work with banks, insurance providers, accountants, and other external partners as required.
- Provide leadership and direction to the accounting department.
- Maintain financial discipline while remaining approachable and solutions focused.
- Perform additional financial analysis and reporting as required by ownership and management.
Qualifications and Experience
- CPA designation required.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Previous construction accounting experience required, ideally within a general contractor, subcontractor, specialty contractor, homebuilder, or other project-based construction organization.
- Experience working within a multi-company or multi-division construction group is a strong asset.
- Previous experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or similar accounting leadership position preferred.
- Robust knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, project profitability, progress billing, holdbacks, and construction cash flow.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and variance analysis.
- Strong knowledge of inventory accounting and valuation.
- Experience with intercompany accounting and reconciliations.
- Working knowledge of corporate tax, GST, and payroll.
- Proficiency with Sage 100 is strongly preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong overall financial-system proficiency.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to communicate financial information effectively with both accounting and operational teams.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and financial discipline.

What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who can do more than simply produce financial statements. The right candidate will understand the numbers, understand how construction projects make or lose money, identify issues before they become larger problems, and provide management with the information needed to make good business decisions.
They must be capable of leading the accounting department while also working effectively with operations and senior management across the organization.
