Agents and reports are only as good as the data underneath them. The Data and Solutions Engineer builds that foundation, owns the architecture it sits on, and hands it over in a form the client can run.

Job Overview

The Data and Solutions Engineer is the most technical seat in a Hume Edge delivery pod. The role owns the end to end solution architecture and the security and permissions model, and builds the data layer that the pod's agents, automations, and reports depend on. The work runs from the first architecture decision through to a documented hand off to the client's IT and platform teams.

The engineer works alongside the engagement lead, the AI solutions developer, and the AI enablement consultant, and with client IT, security, platform governance, and source system owners. On larger engagements the engineer directs flex specialists, such as a reviewing architect, a document AI specialist, or a Power BI developer, on the data items they touch.

This is a hands on build role with architecture accountability. It suits an engineer who can design a medallion data layer on Microsoft Fabric or Azure, write the pipelines, prove reconciliation to the client's own numbers, and explain the design to an enterprise architect and a finance manager in the same week.

You’ll collaborate across project teams using Agile practices and contribute throughout the solution lifecycle, from analysis and design to implementation and ongoing improvement.

Responsibilities

- Assess client data environments, business requirements, and analytics needs; translate findings into clear technical recommendations.
- Design and implement data architectures,



database structures, data warehouses, and scalable processing solutions.
- Develop, test, and maintain data pipelines and integrations using tools and technologies such as Informatica, Hadoop, Apache Hive, and Spark.
- Write and optimize SQL queries and work with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases.
- Use Python and Java to build data-processing, integration, and automation solutions.
- Apply big data technologies to process and analyze large, diverse datasets.
- Support analytics initiatives by preparing trustworthy data and helping teams interpret results.
- Create scripts and utilities using Bash (Unix shell), shell scripting, and, where appropriate, VBA.
- Document solution designs, data flows, technical decisions, and operational procedures.
- Identify data quality, performance, and reliability issues; investigate root causes and implement improvements.
- Collaborate with client stakeholders, developers, analysts, and other consultants throughout Agile project delivery.
- Share technical guidance and support knowledge transfer to help clients maintain and evolve delivered solutions.

Qualifications

- Eight or more years in data engineering, with at least three on Azure or Microsoft Fabric
- Demonstrated experience in data engineering, data solutions, database development, or a related consulting role.
- Strong SQL skills and practical experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or comparable relational database platforms.
- Experience designing databases and data warehouse solutions, including data models and integration patterns.
- Familiarity with big data platforms and technologies such as Hadoop, Apache Hive, and Spark.
- Experience with Informatica or similar data integration and ETL tools.




- Programming experience in Python and/or Java; ability to use Bash (Unix shell) and shell scripting for automation.
- Familiarity with AWS and cloud-based data services or architectures.
- Understanding of analytics concepts and the data needs that support reporting and decision-making.
- Experience working in Agile teams and communicating technical concepts to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Strong analysis skills, attention to detail, and a structured approach to troubleshooting complex data problems.
- VBA experience is a plus.
- DP-600 or DP-700, or Azure Data Engineer Associate, or an equivalent record of delivered work
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada and the ability to invoice as an independent contractor, through a sole proprietorship or corporation

Additional experience valued

- Azure Document Intelligence or a comparable document extraction service
- Finance data structures: cost centres, WBS, general ledger, capital versus operating treatment
- Azure AI Foundry or Azure OpenAI, and the data patterns that feed agents over governed sources
- Experience in mining, energy, or other asset heavy industries, or in regulated sectors
- Experience directing or reviewing the work of other engineers or specialists
- Bilingual English and French
