Your Mission
We are hiring a MarTech Principal Engineer to set one technical direction across the marketing platforms of a global pharmaceutical company, in line with its digital and marketing strategy.
At the client, content is created and approved in one system, delivered as an experience in another and measured in a third, and each is run by a different team and different vendors. When the connections between them are designed well, a business result can be traced back to the asset and the workflow that produced it. When they are not, content creators cannot see how their work performs and analysts spend their time reconciling data instead of finding insight. You will own that end-to-end coherence, and we are looking in particular for depth in email, content and end-to-end content pipelines.
This is a senior technical leadership role. Influence comes from clarity and credibility rather than a reporting line. Where teams cannot agree, you make the recommendation, keep the written decision record and escalate to senior leadership.
The role is AI native. We expect you to build with AI every day, to design platforms that AI assistants and agents can use as easily as people do, and to bring that way of working to the teams around you.
The role is remote. Travel within your region and to other regions will be required, and occasional weekend, holiday or after-hours work may be needed.
What You’ll Do
Technical Direction
- Set a single technical approach across content creation and approval, publishing and experience delivery, and measurement and reporting, and own two handoffs: content to experience, and experience to insight.
- Define cross-team standards for APIs, metadata and taxonomy, data governance and security.
- Lead architecture reviews and decision records,
and act as the technical escalation point for platform migrations, vendor consolidation and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Inform vendor and build-versus-buy decisions by quantifying the cost of architectural options.
AI Capability
- Lead the reusable AI capability layer: shared skills, agents and services that let teams automate their own work, and make the client’s services callable by AI assistants and agents.
- Show how new patterns for patients and healthcare professionals can be built safely, approved and proven in production, bringing medical, legal, regulatory, privacy and security partners in at the design stage.
Leadership and Partnership
- Explain technical trade-offs on cost, risk and sequencing to senior leaders in plain language.
- Partner with the client’s enterprise digital organisation on what to consume, extend or build, including cloud, edge and enterprise GenAI services.
- Mentor senior engineers across the platform teams and raise the technical bar.
What You Bring
Core Experience
- 9+ years of software and platform engineering, including architecting systems that span organisational boundaries.
- A track record of building something new in a regulated environment and getting it approved and live in production.
- Credibility as a technical leader who has set direction for teams you did not manage.
- Strong communication with senior leaders and non-technical audiences.
AI Native
- Daily, hands-on use of AI tools to design, build and review work, and a clear view of where they help and where they do not.
- Depth in applied AI: agents and assistants, tool and context interfaces such as the Model Context Protocol, retrieval over approved content, evaluation, guardrails and traceability.
- Ability to judge cost, latency and risk, including what happens when a model changes underneath you.
- Instinct to automate and reuse, and to help others do the same.
Marketing Technology
Depth in three or four of the areas below, including content and email, working knowledge of the rest, and the ability to get fluent quickly. Experience with the named tools or their equivalents is expected. How you reason about a category matters more than experience with any one product.
- Content supply chain, end to end: asset management, metadata and taxonomy, workflow, promotional review and approval, claims libraries and content reuse,
with tools such as Veeva Vault (promotional review and approval) and Adobe Workfront (work management), or equivalents.
- Marketing automation and email: Marketo or equivalent (for example Salesforce Marketing Cloud), including approved-email patterns and consent-driven preferences.
- Web and experience delivery: enterprise and headless content management such as Adobe Experience Manager, design systems, multi-market publishing and accessibility.
- Analytics and measurement: tag management, data layer standards, Adobe Analytics or equivalent, experimentation, and search and generative-AI visibility.
- Paid media and display: creative production through to media activation.
- Consent, identity and privacy: preference management and authentication for patient and healthcare professional services.
- Cloud and enterprise platform: AWS, Cloudflare, enterprise GenAI services, identity and API gateways.
Bonus Skills / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Pharmaceutical or other regulated industry experience, including promotional review, privacy and security requirements.
- Experience designing patient-facing or clinician-facing technology.
