Total Motor Werkes
Whitchurch-Stouffville
Maybe you still love working on cars. You're just starting to hate the
environment you're doing it in.
If that sentence makes sense to you, keep reading.
Total Motor Werkes is a small independent German and European specialist shop. We're looking for another technician
- but probably not in the conventional sense.
We're looking for range.
Not somebody who only does diagnostics. Not somebody who only swaps parts. We're looking for an automotive Swiss Army knife: someone who can diagnose an electrical fault, repair a harness, take apart a mechanical assembly,
fabricate or modify something when necessary, research an unfamiliar system, and put the whole car back together properly.
You don't need to be a superstar or know everything. But you should be bright, mechanically intuitive, curious, and already capable of working without somebody standing over your shoulder all day.
Maybe you've built your own car. Maybe you've rebuilt engines, modified wiring, fabricated brackets, restored something old, or made something work when there wasn't a clean instruction manual. That kind of experience matters here.
The person we think may fit best
You may be a few years into the trade - perhaps two, three or four years into a dealership or professional shop - and you're good enough now to know that you want more than repeating one narrow type of work all day.
You still care about the craft. You still want to understand how things work. But the constant pressure, flat-rate mentality, politics, negativity or "this is stupid / that is stupid" attitude around you is starting to make you dislike something you originally loved.
We're not trying to convince somebody to become this kind of person. We're looking for somebody who already is.
Our philosophy matters as much as ability.
Cars are inanimate objects. A seized bolt isn't stupid. An unusual design isn't stupid. A difficult electrical problem isn't personally attacking us. It's simply a problem that hasn't been solved yet.
We don't believe getting angry at a car, blaming the engineer, throwing tools, or filling the shop with negativity makes anyone a better technician. We diagnose it, understand it, repair it, learn from it, and move forward.
That doesn't mean the work is always easy. It means we take responsibility for the energy we bring into the building. A difficult day doesn't need to become everybody else's difficult day.
If something goes wrong, we deal with it. If a diagnosis takes longer than expected, we keep thinking. If somebody makes a mistake, we own it, correct it, learn from it, and move forward. Nobody gets screamed at because a job took an unexpected turn.
This isn't a workplace philosophy we're experimenting with. It's how we already operate. If that sounds overly philosophical or strange to you, this probably isn't your shop. If it sounds familiar because you've already been trying to live and work this way, we'd like to hear from you.
What the work looks like
The work can move between mechanical repair, diagnostics, electrical and wiring repair, fabrication, older vehicles, restoration work, modern German cars, and occasionally the problem another shop didn't want to figure out.
Sometimes the right tool is a scan tool. Sometimes it's a multimeter. Sometimes it's a soldering iron, a welder, a grinder, a wiring diagram, a lathe, or something you need to make.
Mercedes-Benz, BMW and European experience is a major asset. A 310S license is welcome, but an exceptional later-stage apprentice with the right ability, judgement and mindset is also worth talking to.
The schedule and compensation
32-40 paid hours per week. A four-day schedule can be your normal week, with a fifth day available if you prefer the additional hours. A typical day is approximately 7:00 AM-4:00 PM with a one-hour lunch, for eight paid hours.
Compensation depends on experience and capability, with strong candidates around $40-$45+/hour.
What matters here
We care about workmanship even when nobody is watching. We care about being able to think independently. We care about curiosity, accountability, calm problem-solving, and leaving the shop better than we found it.
We're a small shop, so every person affects the room. We're not trying to build the biggest shop. We're trying to build a very good one, with very positive people who actually enjoy being here.
If you've been wondering whether you stopped loving cars - or whether you simply stopped loving the environments you've been asked to work in - come talk to us.
You may still love the craft. You may just need a different place to practise it.
