Ready to build technology that brings powerful industrial equipment to life?
Aarcomm Systems is looking for a hands-on, curious Embedded Firmware Developer to join the Custom Application Development team.
ABOUT US
Aarcomm System design and manufacture advanced radio remote control systems used to operate mobile industrial equipment, including hydrovacs and concrete line pumps. Our goal is to have “An Aarcomm solution on every job site.”
Our team is innovative, collaborative, and passionate about bringing next-generation technology to life. We’re guided by three core values:
- Dig Deeper: We're naturally enthusiastic, curious, and open-minded. We don't settle for surface answers. We explore every detail to solve problems right the first time.
- Build with Heart: We care deeply about our people and our customers. Empathy, considerateness, and integrity guide us as we create solutions that make a real difference
- Push the Limits: Bold and adventurous, we break through barriers and rethink what's possible. Always striving to innovate and lead in our industry.
At Aarcomm, our Core Values are the guiding principles that shape how we work, support one another, and bring next-generation technology to life. You'll be part of a smart, hardworking, professional, and creative team in a friendly, inclusive, multicultural, and high-performing environment. We take our work seriously, support each other, and genuinely enjoy working together.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You’ll design and develop custom embedded firmware that translates customer requirements into reliable, operator-friendly applications for Aarcomm’s radio remote control systems.
Working alongside experienced firmware developers and our Field Application Engineer (FAE), you’ll contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from software design and coding to debugging, testing, and documentation.
Our team is also modernizing its codebase to improve architecture, portability, and maintainability. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to these improvements, strengthen our automated testing capabilities, and help us deliver customer solutions more efficiently.
ABOUT YOU
You’re a thoughtful, hands-on developer who writes clean, maintainable code and understands how software behaves in resource-constrained embedded systems. You can identify architectural improvements, troubleshoot complex issues, and explain your technical decisions clearly.
You enjoy collaborating, sharing ideas, and learning from others. You’re curious about new tools and approaches, including AI-assisted development, and open to exploring how they can support your work. You bring sound engineering judgment, a commitment to quality, and an understanding of the importance of reliable, safety-focused code when working with industrial equipment.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Develop Firmware
- Design, develop, and maintain custom embedded applications in C for ARM and MSP430 microcontrollers, including FreeRTOS-based applications where applicable.
- Translate customer requirements into reliable, safety-focused code in collaboration with the FAE.
- Document firmware design, software architecture, and customer applications.
Test, Review & Improve
- Review colleagues’ code, provide constructive feedback, and identify opportunities to improve software architecture and code quality.
- Contribute to continuous integration, automated builds, unit testing and regression testing.
- Help modernize the codebase by improving modularity, reducing tightly coupled components, and increasing code portability.
- Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate development, refactoring, testing, and documentation while independently verifying results.
- Debug firmware using tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and protocol sniffers.
Collaborate & Improve
- Engage in design discussions, identifying potential risks and safety gaps early in development.
- Work closely with colleagues to continuously improve firmware architecture, development processes, and documentation standards.
- Stay up to date on emerging technologies and industry best practices to enhance product performance and reliability.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
- Strong, hands-on embedded software development experience in C, ideally 5+ years.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions and contribute constructively to code and design reviews.
- Solid understanding of software architecture,
data structures, and clean, maintainable code.
- Knowledge of microcontrollers and hardware interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, and USB, including embedded timing and memory constraints.
- Practical debugging skills and familiarity with embedded development tools and lab equipment.
- A quality-focused mindset, sound engineering judgment, and an interest in continuous improvement.
- Openness to AI-assisted development, with the ability to write, understand, debug, and verify code independently.
- A degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience with ARM or MSP430 microcontrollers, FreeRTOS, or CAN bus protocols such as J1939 and CANopen.
- Familiarity with software refactoring, hardware abstraction, or portable embedded architecture.
- Exposure to Git or Perforce, CI/CD, automated testing, or Linux-based development tools such as Make and GCC.
- Experience with industrial controls, automotive or vehicular electronics, robotics, or safety-critical systems.
- Proficiency in reading and understanding schematics, harness and wiring drawings, and pinout definitions.
- Experience developing GUIs for small displays.
- Python scripting experience.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU
It’s a priority to take care of our team and reward them for their contributions. As part of our dedicated, growing, and dynamic team, you can expect:
- Market-competitive salary of $90,000–$115,000 per year, based on experience, with flexibility for an exceptional candidate.
- Comprehensive benefits for you and your family.
- A positive, collaborative work environment that prioritizes health and safety.
- Meaningful engineering work, opportunities to take ownership, and the chance to improve products and development practices.
- 15 vacation days, 2 PTO days, and 5 sick days.
- Team events and convenient on-site parking.
- An initially on-site role in Coquitlam, with the potential to transition to hybrid work at the manager’s discretion.
Ready to build reliable technology that makes a difference in the real world? We’d love to hear from you.
