About the Overnight Warming Centre
Porchlight operates an Overnight Warming Centre in Cambridge in partnership with the Region of Waterloo and Wesley United Church.
From November 1 to March 31, the Centre provides a life-saving, low-barrier space for people experiencing homelessness, offering warmth, food, safety, connection, and a welcoming place to spend the night.
Each morning, after guests leave the Centre, our cleaning team helps prepare the space so it is clean, safe, and welcoming when people return that evening.
About the Role
We are looking for two dependable and thorough cleaners to support the daily operation of the Overnight Warming Centre.
Each cleaner will work approximately 14 hours per week over four days. Regular shifts are 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with both cleaners working together on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Responsibilities will include:
- Sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors throughout the Warming Centre.
- Cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces, tables, furniture, and shared spaces.
- Cleaning and disinfecting washrooms, including toilets, sinks, fixtures, floors, and other surfaces.
- Cleaning, disinfecting, moving, and storing sleeping mats each morning.
- Emptying garbage and recycling and replacing liners.
- Cleaning kitchen and food-service areas as required.
- Cleaning spills and addressing other areas requiring additional sanitation.
- Restocking washroom, cleaning, and sanitation supplies.
- Safely using and storing cleaning chemicals and equipment according to instructions and workplace safety requirements.
- Identifying maintenance, safety, pest, or sanitation concerns and reporting them to the Warming Centre Manager.
- Helping maintain an organized cleaning and storage area.
- Completing other reasonable cleaning duties required to ensure the Centre is ready for the following evening.
The Warming Centre Worker role itself includes cleaning and maintaining the safety of the space; these dedicated cleaning positions will provide the more thorough daily cleaning and sanitation required following overnight operations.

You are dependable, organized, and take pride in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
You are comfortable working independently while also being part of a larger team. You understand that cleanliness is particularly important in a congregate setting where many people share sleeping, washroom, and common spaces.
You also understand that the Warming Centre is more than a facility—it is a place where people experiencing homelessness come for safety and belonging—and you approach the space and the people who use it with dignity and respect.
The following would be considered assets:
- Previous professional cleaning, custodial, housekeeping, or sanitation experience.
- Experience cleaning shelters, congregate living environments, community facilities, healthcare spaces,
or other high-use settings.
- Knowledge of safe cleaning and disinfection practices.
- Experience using commercial cleaning products and equipment.
- Knowledge of WHMIS or willingness to complete required training.
- Ability to work independently and reliably complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including standing, bending, lifting, moving sleeping mats, and operating cleaning equipment.
