This one is for a P.Eng. who enjoys the design side of municipal work and wants to stay close to it, rather than drifting into pure management.

My client is a civil consultancy in Eastern Ontario where the offices work as one team rather than separate silos, so you’d regularly collaborate with colleagues across locations. Municipal work is a big part of what they do. In Ottawa alone, roughly half the staff work on it, serving the City of Ottawa and a long list of surrounding municipalities. On top of that, there’s a good mix of provincial and federal projects for clients such as DCC/DND, Public Works, and Infrastructure Ontario.

They want someone senior enough to run projects on their own and guide the junior engineers, but who is still happy getting stuck in when required. You’d work out of whichever of the three offices is closest to home on a hybrid basis.

Responsibilities

- Running road projects of all sizes, from local streets and trails up to arterials and divided highways, covering both recent builds and rehab
- Taking projects from the initial report through preliminary and detailed design, then staying with them through construction admin
- Writing specs,



putting tender packages together and handling approval applications
- Signing off shop drawings
- Being the main point of contact for clients, contractors, subconsultants and the site team
- Working alongside engineers in the other offices when projects call for it
- Giving junior engineers direction and support day to day
- Pitching in on proposals when new work comes up

Qualifications

- P.Eng. in Ontario and at least 7 years in a design office
- Civil 3D is a must, along with Word, Excel and MS Project
- Municipal project experience from start to finish, design through to construction
- Able to pull together a cost estimate and write a spec without much hand holding
- Experience dealing with municipalities and environmental agencies, and getting approvals over the line
- Organized enough to keep several projects moving at once
- Municipal Class EAs on water, wastewater or roads would be a real plus

Compensation

Salary ranges up to $140,000. Where you land comes down to the experience you bring.
