Zellers is a Canadian retail brand with a long heritage in value-focused department store shopping. The company is in a modern relaunch phase, offering a refreshed retail experience centered on affordability, everyday essentials, and a curated selection of apparel, home goods, seasonal products, and lifestyle items.
The new Zellers stores aim to combine nostalgic brand recognition with a modern, simplified shopping experience, focusing on friendly customer service, accessible pricing, and a convenient in-store layout.
Zellers is building a new generation of stores and expanding gradually across Canada as part of its ongoing redevelopment strategy.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly organized, proactive, and detail-oriented Construction Project Manager to oversee retail construction, renovations, and store development projects across our national retail network.
Projects range from minor store renovations and improvements to complete retail store buildouts, including the development and execution of brand-specific retail concepts.
This position is based at our Toronto head office; however, extensive travel to retail locations throughout Canada is an essential requirement of the role. The successful candidate must be comfortable travelling frequently to meet contractors, review scopes of work, assess project requirements, monitor construction progress, resolve outstanding issues, and ensure projects are completed to company standards.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of relevant project management experience, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Candidates should bring practical experience in commercial or retail construction, including working with architects, construction drawings, landlords, contractors, and the permitting and approval process. Strong project management capabilities, organization, accountability, and follow-through remain essential to success in this role.

- Coordinate contractors, suppliers, landlords, and internal departments.
- Track milestones, identify delays, and proactively resolve issues.
- Maintain organized project documentation and provide regular progress updates.
Site Visits & Travel
- Travel extensively throughout Canada to oversee construction, renovations, and store development projects.
- Conduct in office meetings with contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
- Review project scopes of work and assess site-specific requirements.
- Conduct site inspections before, during, and after construction.
- Monitor project progress, workmanship, and adherence to agreed specifications.
- Identify deficiencies and coordinate corrective action.
- Follow up on outstanding work to ensure timely project completion.
- Travel on short notice when project requirements demand it.
Construction & Renovations
- Oversee projects ranging from minor cosmetic improvements to complete retail store buildouts.
- Coordinate flooring, painting, lighting, electrical, millwork, fixtures, signage, and other store improvements.
- Support the implementation of brand-specific store concepts.
- Coordinate construction activities in operating retail locations while minimizing business disruption.
- Work directly with architects, designers, and contractors to review and coordinate construction drawings, floor plans, elevations, and project specifications.
- Review construction plans and drawings to ensure alignment with approved store layouts, brand standards, and project requirements.
- Coordinate with landlords and tenant coordinators regarding construction requirements, design submissions, approvals, and project timelines.
- Manage and follow up on permit applications, municipal approvals, inspections, and other construction-related requirements.
- Ensure contractors are working from approved plans and that construction is completed in accordance with project specifications and landlord requirements.
Budget Management & Reporting
- Obtain and evaluate contractor and supplier quotations.
- Monitor project expenses and maintain accurate budget tracking.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Maintain a centralized project tracking system.
- Provide regular updates to management regarding project progress, timelines, budgets, and outstanding issues.
Qualifications

- Exceptional organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
- Strong communication, contractor coordination,
and follow-up abilities.
- Experience reviewing quotations, coordinating project schedules, and monitoring budgets.
- Practical experience working with architects, construction drawings, floor plans, elevations, and construction specifications.
- Working knowledge of construction permitting, municipal approvals, inspections, and landlord construction requirements.
- Experience communicating and coordinating directly with landlords, tenant coordinators, contractors, and other construction stakeholders.
- Sufficient technical construction knowledge to review project requirements, coordinate contractors, and identify potential issues throughout the construction process.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and project management tools.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout Canada, including overnight travel and occasional short-notice trips.
Retail construction experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with shopping centre landlords, tenant coordinators, landlord construction criteria, and retail store buildouts. Candidates with comparable commercial construction or tenant improvement experience who demonstrate directly transferable skills will also be considered.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is exceptionally organized, proactive, accountable, and comfortable working independently.
The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of commercial construction processes and be confident working with architects, landlords, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
They will be equally comfortable managing project details from the office and travelling to retail locations to review work, address issues, and ensure projects remain on schedule.
This is a hands-on, travel-intensive project management role suited to someone who combines practical construction experience with exceptional organizational skills, strong communication, and the ability to take ownership of multiple projects from start to finish.
