About Branchout
Branchout is a free program for students and self-taught developers who have the skills from coursework but haven’t yet worked on a team. We put you in a small remote team with a project brief modelled on a real startup problem, and you build it from the first commit to a deployed app.
When the project ends, you get a written report on your own work: what you built, the technologies you used, the problems you solved, and the feedback you received. You can use it in a resume, a portfolio, or an application. You also get a certificate of completion that employers can verify with a code.
The role
You’ll join a team of up to six students and work remotely for about four months, around four hours a week. You’ll build both sides of a web app, and your teammates will review your code as you review theirs.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and test frontend and backend features
- Plan the app’s structure and user experience with your team
- Connect APIs and data sources
- Join short standups and planning sessions
- Give and get code reviews, work from an issue tracker, and keep the documentation current
- Fix bugs, speed up slow parts,
and change features as the project and feedback change
- Share what you learn with teammates
Who we’re looking for
- You can build a small web app: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript on the frontend, and a backend with a REST API and a database behind it. Our stack is React, Node, and Postgres.
- You use Git and have opened a pull request, even on your own project
- You write code that someone else can read
- You explain problems clearly in writing and ask for help early
- You’re a current student or recent graduate in computer science, software engineering or something close, or you’ve taught yourself. A degree isn’t required.
- You want honest feedback and plan to use this work for internship or entry-level applications
What you get A real project on a real team, a report on your individual contribution, a verifiable certificate, and a deployed app and codebase that you own. This is an educational program, not a job. It’s unpaid and doesn’t promise employment, income, or academic credit.
