PakEnergy is accelerating its innovation. Help us lead it.
About The Company
More than 2,300 oil and gas companies rely on PakEnergy for land, production, accounting and transportation software. PakEnergy is expanding the use of artificial intelligence across its platform and building an Innovation Lab to identify high-value customer challenges, develop prototypes using real operational data, and bring successful solutions into production. Existing Pak AI solutions include lease provision analysis, automated extraction of data from transportation documents, and well optimization using operational data. The Innovation Lab brings together product and industry experts, data science, and solution engineering to turn customer problems into practical products.
About The Role
PakEnergy is seeking a Lead Applied AI Engineer to establish and lead generative AI and agentic systems for the Innovation Lab. Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, you will be a hands-on technical leader who designs and builds solutions while setting the architecture, standards and direction for applied AI. You will have autonomy over technical choices, including build-versus-buy decisions, and help shape the opportunity backlog with product leadership and industry experts. This founding role offers the chance to take solutions from early exploration through customer pilots and production. There are no direct reports initially, but you will help prepare for and shape the future growth of the Lab’s applied AI team. Qualifications You bring at least eight years of experience building production software or machine learning systems,
including two or more years developing and shipping LLM applications to users. You have set technical direction for AI or ML systems and have experience mentoring, coaching or leading engineers. You have hands-on expertise with retrieval-augmented generation, agentic or tool-using systems, and production practices such as prompt and configuration versioning, regression testing, rollbacks, guardrails, evaluation, observability and tracing. You can make sound decisions about models, vendors, prompt and context engineering, and when fine-tuning is appropriate. Strong Python skills, including production services, APIs and testing, and experience deploying to a major cloud platform are required. You communicate clearly with technical and nontechnical stakeholders, work effectively with domain experts, and exercise candor when a solution is not viable. A computer science or related degree, or equivalent practical experience, is required; an advanced degree is welcome. Energy or industrial experience, document AI, open-weight models, Azure or AWS AI services, and early-stage team-building experience are valued but not required. Responsibilities Partner with industry experts across Land, Production, Accounting and Transportation to identify workflow challenges and determine where generative AI is appropriate.
Design and build LLM applications, including retrieval-augmented generation, agents, tool use and document extraction for leases, contracts, tickets and other operational records. Evaluate models and providers, engineer prompts and context, and apply fine-tuning when evidence supports it. Build systems with appropriate human review, safety controls and protections for customer data. Assess risks related to agent actions, permissions and data access, while managing cost and latency through monitoring, fallbacks and operational safeguards. Work with the Lead Data Scientist on data, evaluation and classical machine learning, and with solution engineers on customer pilots. Collaborate with Engineering to ship features into PakEnergy products, monitor performance in production, and incorporate customer feedback. Establish reusable architecture, standards and responsible AI practices; document approaches, coach teammates and contribute to future hiring plans. Benefits PakEnergy offers a casual business work workplace, generous paid time off, employer-sponsored health benefits and a retirement savings plan, including a 401(k) for U.
S. employees. The preferred locations are the Frisco, Texas, or Calgary, Alberta, offices. Exceptional candidates may be considered for remote work with a required onsite cadence. Equal Opportunity PakEnergy is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and are committed to an inclusive hiring process. If you are excited about this opportunity but do not meet every listed qualification, we encourage you to apply.
