The Atlantic Pilotage Authority (APA) is a federal Crown corporation responsible for providing safe and efficient marine pilotage services throughout Atlantic Canada. Operating a fleet of pilot boats that support critical marine transportation activities across the region, APA plays an essential role in Canada's marine supply chain. Meridia Recruitment Solutions is excited to partner with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority to recruit a Fleet Manager to join their team in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Reporting to the Director of Fleet & Infrastructure, the Fleet Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operational support, maintenance coordination, and technical oversight of APA's fleet assets. Acting as a key point of contact for vessel crews, contractors, and internal stakeholders, the Fleet Manager helps ensure fleet operations remain safe, reliable, and responsive to operational demands.
This is a highly visible and hands-on leadership role that combines technical marine expertise with operational coordination and problem-solving. Serving as the first point of contact for operational and maintenance-related issues, the Fleet Manager provides troubleshooting support, coordinates repairs and resources, and helps resolve challenges across APA's fleet, allowing leadership to focus on longer-term strategic priorities.
Serve as the primary operational contact for vessel crews, providing technical support and troubleshooting assistance.
Coordinate and oversee fleet maintenance activities to ensure vessel reliability and operational readiness.
Assess operational issues and coordinate appropriate corrective actions, including contractor engagement and escalation when required.
Support the planning and execution of vessel dry dock periods, inspections, and repair programs.
Work closely with vessel crews, contractors,
and internal stakeholders to resolve operational and maintenance concerns.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, service providers, and external stakeholders to support fleet operations and maintenance activities.
Communicate and reinforce safe work practices, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and operational procedures.
Monitor fleet performance and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
Assist with maintenance planning, asset management initiatives, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Travel throughout Atlantic Canada on a planned basis to support vessel operations and facilities.
Provide leadership and operational support within a 24/7 marine environment, including occasional after-hours support when required.
The ideal candidate is a technically strong marine engineering or marine operations professional with a practical, operations-focused mindset. You enjoy troubleshooting complex issues, coordinating resources, supporting frontline crews, and serving as the go-to person when challenges arise. You thrive in fast-paced environments where technical expertise, sound judgment, and solid communication skills are equally important.
Marine engineering certification is preferred; candidates with significant marine industry experience may also be considered.
Experience supporting vessel operations, maintenance programs, or marine asset management activities.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues involving marine systems and equipment.
Knowledge of vessel maintenance practices, regulatory requirements, and marine safety standards.
Experience coordinating contractors, service providers, and technical projects.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with vessel crews, contractors, and operational stakeholders.
Leadership experience gained through operational, supervisory, or project-based responsibilities.
Willingness to travel throughout Atlantic Canada on a planned basis, typically a few days per month.
Experience working within a unionized environment is considered an asset.
By joining the Atlantic Pilotage Authority, you will play a critical role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of a fleet that serves ports throughout Atlantic Canada. This is an opportunity to work closely with experienced marine professionals while making a direct impact on operational performance, safety, and service delivery. You will join a respected organization with a strong reputation in the marine industry and a commitment to continuous improvement and employee development.
