Twin Staffing is leading a confidential search for an experienced Director of Health, Safety and Environment on behalf of a rapidly growing, multi-branch Canadian equipment-rental organization.
This is an opportunity to design, build and lead a national HSE program across branches, service shops, yards, field operations and transportation activities. The successful candidate will establish the strategy, systems and standards required to support continued growth while creating a practical and consistent safety culture across Canada.
This is not simply a compliance position. The organization needs a hands-on leader who can build a scalable HSE management system, earn the confidence of frontline employees and help operational leaders turn safety requirements into effective everyday practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and implement a national HSE management system, including policies, procedures, forms, training requirements, inspection programs, audit tools and corrective-action processes.
- Develop a multi-year HSE strategy aligned with continued branch expansion and operational growth.
- Maintain compliance with occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation, environmental and transportation requirements across multiple Canadian jurisdictions.
- Establish practical safety programs for equipment-rental operations, including:
- Shop and yard safety
- Equipment movement and inspections
- Loading, unloading and load securement
- Lockout and tagout
- Line-of-fire controls
- Working at heights
- PPE and chemical handling
- Housekeeping and 5S
- Customer-site and field-service work
- Develop driver and transportation standards for Class 1 and Class 3 operations, including vehicle inspections, driver qualifications, documentation, coaching and incident reporting.
- Create national training matrices, onboarding programs, toolbox talks, refresher training and competency-tracking processes.
- Lead the investigation of incidents,
near misses and hazards, including root-cause analysis and corrective-action follow-through.
- Partner with branch managers, service managers, technicians, drivers, dispatch, sales, HR and senior leadership to embed safety into daily operations.
- Develop HSE dashboards and report on leading and lagging indicators, claims, audit findings, training completion and corrective-action closure.
- Conduct branch audits, site visits, hazard assessments and management-system reviews across Canada.
- Support regulatory interactions, customer safety prequalification, emergency preparedness, contractor requirements and return-to-work coordination.
- Build a culture in which employees feel comfortable identifying hazards, stopping unsafe work and participating in operational improvements.
What You Bring
- At least seven years of progressive HSE experience.
- Experience building, implementing or significantly improving safety programs across multiple locations or operational groups.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian occupational health and safety requirements across multiple provinces.
- Experience within equipment rental, construction, transportation, logistics, industrial services, heavy equipment, fleet operations or a comparable operational environment.
- Knowledge of commercial transportation safety, including inspections, documentation, load securement and driver-risk controls.
- Strong capabilities in incident investigation, root-cause analysis, hazard assessment, corrective-action management and emergency planning.
- Experience developing training programs, audit systems, safety dashboards and supervisor leadership tools.
- The ability to influence executives, operational managers, supervisors and frontline employees.
- Strong written,
verbal and executive-level communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, HSE reporting tools, safety databases and document-control systems.
- A valid driver’s licence and the ability to travel regularly across Canada.
Education and Designations
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, Business, Engineering, Operations or a related discipline is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
The following designations are considered robust assets:
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
- Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)
- Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
- Equivalent recognized safety certification
Preferred Experience
- Building an HSE program from the ground up within a growing national organization.
- Supporting equipment-rental, aerial-lift, material-handling, construction-equipment or industrial-service operations.
- Working with COR or SECOR programs.
- Managing regulatory inspections and customer safety-prequalification platforms.
- Developing document-controlled safety manuals, training matrices and audit programs.
- Supporting commercial fleets, propane-handling environments, contractor management, emergency response or return-to-work programs.
What Will Make You Successful
You understand that effective safety programs must work in the field—not only on paper. You are comfortable developing strategy while remaining visible in branches, shops and yards. You listen to frontline employees, hold leaders accountable and communicate requirements in a practical way that earns operational support.
The right person will bring structure, consistency and leadership to a growing organization while creating a safety program that can scale alongside the business.
If you are an experienced HSE leader interested in building a national program and making a measurable impact within a growing operational organization, we would welcome a confidential conversation.
