About EMFTS
ExxonMobil Fracture Technology Systems (EMFTS) develops innovative downhole completion technologies that support energy operations across North America and globally. Our team is committed to engineering excellence, innovation, quality, and continuous improvement. At EMFTS, employees have the opportunity to work on meaningful engineering challenges, collaborate with experienced professionals, and contribute directly to the development and advancement of industry-leading technologies.
We are seeking motivated engineers who enjoy solving complex technical problems, improving processes, and driving operational excellence.
Job Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, test, and support downhole tools and related mechanical systems. You will contribute throughout the product lifecycle, including concept development, detailed design, engineering analysis, prototyping, qualification testing, production release, field deployment, and sustaining engineering.
The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design and analytical skills with practical experience building and troubleshooting hardware. Success in this role requires a self-initiating, self-stewarding, detail-oriented engineer who takes ownership, responds quickly to changing needs, and remains focused on delivering practical solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design downhole tools, pressure-containing components, mechanical assemblies, and test equipment.
- Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and engineering documentation.
- Design for demanding conditions, including high pressure, elevated temperature, vibration, shock, fluid exposure, erosion, corrosion, fatigue, and restricted geometry.
- Perform engineering calculations involving stress, pressure containment, fatigue, thermal expansion, fluid flow, torque, and mechanical loading.
- Conduct structural FEA and CFD or thermal-fluid analyses.
- Validate analytical and simulation results through hand calculations, laboratory testing, and field data.
- Create production drawings using GD&T; in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analyses and define functional datums, fits, sealing interfaces, surface finishes, and inspection requirements.
- Select appropriate materials, heat treatments, coatings, seals, fasteners, and manufacturing processes.
- Apply design for manufacturing and assembly principles to improve reliability, quality, cost, and production efficiency.
- Collaborate with machinists, technicians, suppliers, manufacturing engineers, quality personnel, field operations, and service teams.
- Build, assemble, modify, inspect, and troubleshoot prototypes, test fixtures, and mechanical hardware.
- Develop and perform pressure, thermal, vibration, shock, flow, load, endurance, and functional testing.
- Translate test results, field feedback, and unexpected outcomes into practical design improvements.
- Support released products through failure investigations, root cause analysis, manufacturing support, nonconformance disposition, and corrective actions.
- Manage engineering changes, drawing revisions, part substitutions, obsolescence issues, and configuration control.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and technical investigations from problem definition through implementation and closure.
- Communicate technical decisions, risks, recommendations, and project status clearly to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- At least three years of experience in mechanical design, product development, R&D;, or sustaining engineering.
- Experience developing complex mechanical products from concept through testing and production.
- Proficiency with a contemporary 3D CAD platform, such as SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX, or an equivalent system.
- Experience creating production drawings and applying GD&T.;
- Experience with design for manufacturing and assembly.
- Experience performing structural FEA and CFD or thermal-fluid analysis.
- Strong knowledge of engineering mechanics, materials, fatigue, pressure-containing components, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on experience assembling, inspecting, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical hardware.
- Experience supporting released products through manufacturing issues, failure investigations, or engineering changes.
- Robust technical writing, documentation, communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and adapt to evolving technical and business priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing downhole tools, drilling equipment, completion tools, wireline tools, or other oilfield equipment.
- Experience designing equipment for high-pressure, high-temperature, vibration, shock, corrosive, erosive, or abrasive environments.
- Experience with ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL, SolidWorks Simulation, Siemens Simcenter, or equivalent analysis tools.
- Experience correlating simulation results with laboratory or field data.
- Knowledge of FMEA, failure analysis, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.
- Experience with engineering change control, configuration management, nonconformance disposition, and product lifecycle management.
- Experience transitioning new products from R&D; into production.
- Experience supporting qualification testing, field trials, and ongoing product improvement.
Desired Characteristics We are looking for someone who is:
- Self-initiating: Proactively identifies problems, opportunities, and next steps.
- Self-stewarding: Takes responsibility for priorities, resources, commitments, and results with limited direction.
- Detail-oriented: Produces accurate designs, analyses, drawings, and documentation.
- Responsive: Communicates promptly and addresses technical or operational needs with appropriate urgency.
- Energetic: Brings enthusiasm, initiative, and momentum to challenging projects.
- Solution-focused: Concentrates on practical paths forward rather than simply identifying problems.
- Deliverable-focused: Drives tasks and projects to measurable, timely completion.
- Creative: Develops innovative yet practical solutions to difficult engineering challenges.
- A strong project manager: Organizes priorities, coordinates resources, manages risks, and keeps stakeholders informed.
- Positive and resilient: Maintains a constructive, “can-do” mentality when requirements change or test results are unexpected.
- Adaptable: Responds effectively to new research findings, field feedback, production demands, and changing business priorities.
- Team-oriented: Collaborates effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, operations, and service teams.
Why Join Us? This position offers the opportunity to:
- Solve complex mechanical problems for demanding downhole applications.
- Work directly with prototypes, test equipment, production hardware, and fielded products.
- Influence designs from initial concept through qualification and deployment.
- Combine new product development with meaningful sustaining engineering work.
- Operate in a collaborative environment where technical ownership, creativity, practical judgment, and measurable results are valued.
Work Environment This is a hands-on engineering position that may involve time in an office, engineering laboratory, machine shop, manufacturing facility, or field environment. The engineer must be comfortable working directly with mechanical components, prototypes, test fixtures, and production hardware.
