**Job Title: Forklift Operator / Warehouse Associate**
**Job Description**
This role combines forklift operation and hands-on warehouse work in a busy building materials environment, serving a high volume of walk-in and pre-order customers.
You load and unload customer orders, handle heavy building materials, and operate various types of forklifts and RF scanning equipment to ensure accurate and timely order fulfillment.
The position starts primarily indoors and may transition to an outdoor yard environment, where you will spend most of your time on a sit-down forklift.
**Responsibilities**
Pick and load customer orders promptly as they arrive on site, stopping current tasks when radioed to prioritize customer needs.
Receive order information from the warehouse team and quickly locate, pick, and stage products using RF scanners and forklifts.
Hand-load (handbomb) materials such as bags of concrete and other building supplies approximately 50% of the day, frequently getting on and off the forklift.
Operate reach and sit-down forklifts safely and efficiently to move, load, and unload building materials in the warehouse and yard.
Unload incoming deliveries and put away supplies in the correct locations within the warehouse and yard.
Prepare and stage picks for customers who have pre-ordered materials and may be arriving the following day.
Handle a high volume of individual items, ensuring accurate picking, labeling, and loading of each order.
Interact with customers at the warehouse and yard, providing courteous and efficient service, even when customers are under time pressure or impatient.
Multitask effectively by switching between customer loading, inventory put-away, and order preparation as priorities shift.
Follow all safety procedures when operating forklifts and handling heavy materials, including safe lifting techniques for loads up to 50 lbs individually and up to 80 lbs with a partner.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both the warehouse and yard.
Collaborate closely with a small warehouse and yard team, supporting coworkers and stepping in to help wherever needed.
**Essential Skills**
At least 2 years of experience with heavy lifting, including handling bags of concrete and similar building materials.
Minimum 1 year of experience operating a reach forklift in a narrow or smaller warehouse environment for order picking.
Minimum 1 year of experience operating a sit-down forklift, including in yard environments.
Minimum 1 year of experience working in a smaller warehouse setting.
Minimum 1 year of customer service experience, ideally in a warehouse, building supply, or similar environment.
Minimum 1 year of counterbalance forklift experience with propane and/or electric equipment.
Valid AB certification for stand-up forklifts (reach and dockstocker) and sit-down forklifts.
Ability to lift 50 lbs continuously and up to 80 lbs with a partner throughout the shift.
Comfort working in a physically demanding role that involves frequent lifting, bending, and climbing on and off forklifts.
Effective communication skills to interact with customers, drivers, and team members in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to multitask and quickly reprioritize work when customer orders come in.
Reliability in attending shifts that may start as early as 6:00 a.m. and flexibility to work overtime before or after scheduled hours as needed.
**Additional Skills & Qualifications**
Experience using RF scan guns for order picking and inventory management.
Previous experience operating dockstocker equipment.
Additional sit-down forklift experience, particularly in outdoor yard environments.
Experience working with building materials or for a building supply competitor.
Comfort working in a dusty environment due to drywall, concrete, and similar products.
Strong team mindset with a go-getter attitude and willingness to help wherever needed.
**Why Work Here?**
You join a tight-knit team where many employees have long tenure and where internal growth is a real possibility.
Team members have progressed from entry-level roles into sales and branch leadership, demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting from within.
The culture values people who are willing to roll up their sleeves, support one another, and go the extra mile for customers.
You can expect a supportive environment that balances hard work with camaraderie, along with benefits such as medical and dental coverage, retirement savings plan matching, and opportunities to build a long-term career in the building materials industry.
**Work Environment**
The role is based in a skilled-grade building and construction distribution facility located in a southeast industrial area, with two buildings across from each other and a large outdoor yard full of product.
The warehouse is large and can be dusty at times due to drywall, concrete, and other construction materials.
Work is physically demanding and requires frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs alone and up to 80 lbs with a partner.
You will interact continuously with customers, some of whom may be in a hurry or difficult, and you must be comfortable dropping what you are doing to load their orders.
The position typically follows a first shift schedule, generally Monday to Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with an 8-hour workday within that window.
Breaks include a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute breaks, with timing adjusted based on workflow.
Overtime may occur before or after the regular shift within the 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. range.
Reliable transportation is preferred, as the nearest bus stop is about a 30-minute walk from the facility.
Team size is approximately nine people between the warehouse and yard, with a mix of very friendly and more task-focused personalities, all aligned around teamwork and customer satisfaction.
Work attire should be appropriate for a physical, industrial warehouse and outdoor yard environment.
