Position Summary
Jane Alliance Neighbourhood Services (JANS) is seeking an energetic, proactive, and community-oriented Youth Outreach Worker to support the delivery and growth of its Youth Violence Prevention Program.
The successful candidate will be responsible for actively engaging young people in the community, building trusting relationships, promoting program activities, and connecting youth with positive opportunities, services, and supports. This position will play a key role in increasing youth participation, reaching young people who may not already be connected to community programs, and creating welcoming spaces where youth can develop skills, build relationships, and participate in meaningful activities. We are looking for someone who takes initiative, enjoys working directly with young people, is comfortable conducting in-person and digital outreach, and can turn community connections into meaningful youth engagement.
The ideal candidate will be approachable, creative, reliable, and motivated to bring recent youth into JANS programs and encourage their continued participation.
Key Responsibilities
● Conduct proactive, in-person outreach in neighbourhoods and community spaces where young people gather.
● Promote JANS Youth Violence Prevention Program activities, including weekly youth drop-in sessions, workshops, special events, and community initiatives.
● Develop creative strategies to attract new youth participants and encourage existing participants to invite friends and peers.
● Distribute flyers and program information through schools, libraries, community centres, youth-serving agencies, shelters, local businesses, and other appropriate locations.
● Build relationships with youth, families, community leaders, and service providers to increase program awareness and referrals.
● Create an inclusive, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment where youth feel comfortable participating.
● Support youth participation in community events, volunteer opportunities, educational activities, and employment-related initiatives.
● Assist the Program Manager in planning, preparing, and facilitating weekly youth drop-in sessions and special events.
● Develop engaging activity ideas that combine recreation,
skill development, mentorship, and positive youth development.
● Build and maintain working relationships with schools, youth-serving agencies, community organizations, employment services, recreation providers, and other local partners.
● Identify potential referral sources and opportunities for collaboration.
● Attend community events, information sessions, outreach activities, and partner meetings as assigned.
● Share accurate information about JANS services and connect youth with appropriate resources.
● Maintain accurate records of outreach activities, contacts, referrals, inquiries, and follow-ups in accordance with JANS privacy policies.
● Follow JANS safeguarding, confidentiality, consent, incident reporting, and health and safety procedures.
● Maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working with youth, including online and in-person interactions.
Qualifications and Experience
● A diploma or degree in Social Service Work, Child and Youth Care, Community Development, Social Work, Recreation, or a related field is preferred.
● An equivalent combination of relevant community experience, youth engagement experience, and training may be considered.
● Ideally, 2-3 years of experience in youth work, community outreach, recreation programming, mentoring, community engagement, or a related field.
● Demonstrated experience engaging young people and encouraging participation in activities or services.
● Experience conducting in-person outreach, building community relationships, recruiting participants, or promoting programs is strongly preferred.
● Experience facilitating group activities, workshops, recreational programs, or community events is an asset.
● Experience working with youth who face barriers to accessing services or opportunities is an asset.
Employment Requirements
● Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, where legally applicable and required for the position.
● Willingness and ability to travel to community outreach locations and attend occasional evening or weekend activities, according to the agreed work schedule.
● Authorization to work in Canada.
Essential Skills and Competencies
● Takes initiative to identify and approach potential participants rather than waiting for youth to come to the organization.
● Is comfortable being active in the community, visiting outreach locations, attending events, and following up consistently.
● Works collaboratively with the Program Manager, other JANS staff, community partners, volunteers, and placement students.
● Can identify barriers to participation and suggest practical, appropriate solutions.
● Can use email, social media, canva, online forms, and basic documentation tools.
Additional Assets
● Knowledge of Toronto neighbourhoods served by JANS, including Beech-Greenbrook, Rustic, Rockcliffe-Smythe, Yorkdale-Glen Park, Englemont-Lawrence, Weston, Brookhaven-Amesbury, and Weston-Pelham.
● Knowledge of local youth services, recreation opportunities, employment supports, and community resources.
● Experience with youth violence prevention, conflict resolution, mentoring, or positive youth development.
● Experience engaging youth through schools, street outreach, community centres, shelters, or grassroots organizations.
● Familiarity with trauma-informed, strengths-based, and anti-oppressive approaches.
● First Aid/CPR, mental health awareness, or crisis prevention training.
