ABOUT THE ROLE

As Welding Team Lead, you coordinate day-to-day welding operations, ensuring production targets, weld quality standards, and safety requirements are met. You provide hands-on leadership, technical guidance, and support to welders while maintaining workflow, training new team members, and communicating effectively with the Operations Manager and other departments.

As QC Inspector, you are the gatekeeper for weld and product quality: every bin is inspected at each stage — fit-up, post-weld, pre-paint, post-paint and pre-delivery — and nothing moves forward until it meets the drawing, the WPS and Dormel’s quality checklist.

As Materials Kitter, you ensure fabricated parts meet quality requirements and assemble accurate kits for welders and fabricators, supporting smooth production flow through dimensional checks, material verification, job-kit preparation, and documentation.

Attention to detail, accuracy, and familiarity with welding and fabrication processes are essential. The key function of this role is to ensure that established procedures and processes are sustained.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

01 Leadership & Team Coordination

▪ Lead a team of welders on the shop floor, providing direction, coaching, and daily work assignments.

▪ Set priorities according to production schedules and ensure timely completion of work.

▪ Monitor team performance and provide feedback to supervisors.

▪ Support onboarding and training of new welders, helpers, and apprentices.

▪ Promote a positive, efficient, and safety-focused work culture.

02 Technical & Production Duties

▪ Read and interpret welding blueprints, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).

▪ Assist in welding and fabrication work as needed, especially on complex or high-priority jobs.

▪ Verify fit-ups, weld sizes, tolerances, and overall part quality.

▪ Ensure proper use of equipment, consumables, and welding parameters.

▪ Coordinate with the cutting, machining, and assembly departments as needed to optimize workflow.

▪ Perform dimensional inspections on cut, machined, bent, and fabricated parts according to drawings and tolerances.

▪ Verify correct materials, thicknesses, and part identifications before releasing to production.

▪ Maintain calibration checks on measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, squares, weld gauges).

▪ Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and manufacturing procedures.

03 Weld Quality & Inspection

▪ Stage-gate inspection — Inspect every bin at each hold point (pre-weld/fit-up, post-weld, pre-paint, post-paint, pre-delivery) and record results on the Dormel Welding & Product Quality Checklist. No unit moves to paint or delivery with an open or failed item.

▪ Fit-up before welding — Confirm lifting pockets, castor pads, wheel pads and stiffeners are square and correctly positioned, joint gaps are within tolerance, and joint areas are clean of mill scale, rust, oil and paint.

▪ Visual weld inspection — Check weld size, length, profile, location and continuity against the drawing and WPS, with particular attention to fully welded pockets, guards, hinges, lids and pad attachments.

▪ Defect identification — Identify and disposition weld discontinuities including cracks, porosity, undercut, overlap, incomplete fusion, burn-through/holes, missing welds and excessive spatter; direct and verify rework.

▪ Distortion control — Monitor heat input and weld sequence on thin-gauge shells and lids, and flag distortion before it is built into the unit.

▪ Welding parameters & consumables — Spot-check voltage, wire feed speed, travel speed and shielding gas flow; confirm the correct wire, gas and consumables for the process and material thickness, and that consumables are stored properly.

▪ Welder qualification & traceability — Ensure welders work only within the processes and positions they are qualified for, keep qualification records current, and confirm each team member’s stamp is punched and visible on every unit.

▪ Functional checks — Verify split lids operate properly, short sides stand up straight and close correctly, and springs are installed to the yardage-specific requirement.

▪ Paint quality — Confirm finish matches the job file instructions and that runs, drips and missed areas are corrected before release.

▪ Non-conformance control — Tag and isolate non-conforming parts, raise and document non-conformance reports, communicate issues to the Operations Manager and welders, and lead root-cause analysis and corrective action.

▪ Quality metrics — Track first-pass weld yield, rework hours and defects by type and by welder; report trends weekly to the Operations Manager and use them to target coaching and training.

▪ Coaching for prevention — Run short weld-quality toolbox sessions using real rejects and good examples so the team fixes causes, not just symptoms.

04 Kitting Responsibilities

▪ Read and understand fabrication drawings, BOMs, and work orders to prepare complete kits.

▪ Pull required steel, hardware, consumables, and cutting lists based on each job’s specifications.

▪ Label and organize materials in bins or pallets for each welder or workstation.

▪ Ensure kits are complete and correct to minimize production delays.

▪ Track material usage and report shortages or discrepancies.

▪ Coordinate with inventory and purchasing for material restock needs.

▪ Maintain clean, organized kitting and staging areas.

05 Health & Safety

▪ Enforce safety rules, PPE requirements, and safe work procedures.

▪ Conduct daily toolbox talks and identify potential hazards on the shop floor.

▪ Ensure that welding equipment, leads, grounds and fume extraction are properly maintained and secure to use.

▪ Report incidents, near-misses, and unsafe behaviors promptly.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

✓ Every unit leaves the shop with a fully completed, signed-off quality checklist.

✓ First-pass weld quality trends up and rework hours trend down, month over month.

✓ Kits are complete and staged before the shift starts, so welders never wait on material.

✓ Defects are caught at the earliest stage (at fit-up, not at paint or delivery).

✓ A safe shift: hazards raised and closed, zero preventable incidents.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

▪ 1–3 years of experience in metal fabrication, welding, or industrial manufacturing.

▪ Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication / welding drawings.

▪ Working knowledge of weld symbols and visual weld acceptance criteria (CSA W59 / AWS A2.4 familiarity is an asset).

▪ Hands-on experience with GMAW (MIG) and FCAW on carbon steel, including thin-gauge sheet and plate.

▪ Understanding of welding processes (MIG, Stick, FCAW) and how parameters affect weld quality and distortion.

▪ Experience with measurement and inspection tools (tape measure, calipers, squares, fillet weld gauges).

▪ Valid CWB welding ticket is an asset; CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector (Level 1) certification, or willingness to obtain it, is a strong asset.

▪ Good communication skills with welders, supervisors, and production staff.

▪ Ability to lift 30–50 lbs and work in a shop environment.

▪ Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

▪ Basic familiarity with ERP or job-tracking systems (an asset).
