About GRER
Green Response Environmental & Rail Inc. (GRER) is an Ontario railway services company. Our crews do track inspection and maintenance, shunting and derailment recovery for railways and industrial rail customers across the province, and we move our own equipment to every job.
The role
We're hiring an Operations Manager, reporting to our General Manager, to run the day-to-day of the business. You'll make sure our crews show up at the right site with the right equipment, ready to work, and that every job is set up, delivered and closed out cleanly. Expect to spend a good part of the week on the road at job sites across Ontario.
Duties
- Build and manage the crew schedule across all active and upcoming jobs
- Assign foremen, crews and equipment, and adjust as priorities change
- Plan and schedule all equipment and float moves to and between job sites, in line with CVOR, hours-of-service and oversize permit rules
- Track equipment location, availability and maintenance so nothing arrives on site down
- Be the first call for technical questions from foremen in the field
- Kick off new jobs: review scope, schedule, crew, equipment, permits and safety requirements with the foreman before mobilization
- Attend site meetings with railways, customers and contractors
- Close out completed jobs: confirm scope, collect sign-offs, demobilize equipment and hand off for invoicing
- Review and approve employee timesheets
- Gather and verify job costing data: labour, equipment hours, materials, subcontractors and extras
- Flag cost overruns and change orders early so extra work gets billed
- Make sure crews have the training, orientations and railway access credentials they need before going to site
- Keep the GM up to date on job status, schedule and issues
Skills
- 5+ years in railway maintenance, track work or heavy civil construction, including time supervising crews or running jobs
- Working knowledge of track work and rail operating rules (Transport Canada Track Safety Rules and CROR an asset)
- Experience with unions and working with unionized employees
- Experience scheduling crews and equipment across multiple sites
- Understanding of CVOR, hours of service and moving heavy equipment on floats
- Comfortable with timesheets, job costing and spreadsheets; scheduling or field management software an asset
- Explicit communicator with railway reps, customers and field crews
- Valid Ontario driver's licence with a clean abstract
- WHMIS, Working at Heights and railway safety orientations an asset
