Location: Greater Toronto Area (Toronto, ON), Canada
Role Overview Our client seeks a highly skilled, rigorous Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to own and steward the 3 D spatial model for their prototype facility in the Greater Toronto Area. Reporting to the technical leadership of the project, you will lead complex physical plant integration, automated 3 D clash detection, space envelope allocation, and configuration control across all reactor and plant divisions. In this key role, you will oversee the production of manufacturing-ready drawing packages and manage critical reconciliation between as-designed CAD models and as-built metrology data during physical hardware fabrication and facility assembly.
Core Responsibilities 3 D Plant Master Model Custodianship: Serve as a primary owner and custodian of the master 3 D spatial assembly model for the stellarator device, cryostat, vacuum vessel, internal components, and balance-of-plant infrastructure.
Clash Detection & Spatial Integration: Execute continuous automated 3 D spatial clash detection, space envelope management, and physical layout integration across multidisciplinary systems (magnets, heating, diagnostics, cooling loops, and structural frames).
Configuration & Change Control: Apply engineering change control protocols (ECRs/ECOs), managing baseline CAD revisions, design trade-offs, and technical risk registers throughout formal phase-gate reviews.
Design Guidance & Drafting Standards: Guide mechanical design engineers, CAD specialists, and drafting technicians, enforcing standardized CAD modeling guidelines, layer conventions,
and PLM database structures.
Manufacturing Drawing Packages: Generate, verify, and approve detailed 2 D/3 D manufacturing drawing packages, geometric dimension and tolerance specifications, drawing standards, and Bills of Materials (BOM) for internal fabrication and external precision suppliers.
As-Designed vs. As-Built Reconciliation: Lead physical reconciliation between as-designed CAD baselines and as-built laser scanning / 3 D metrology data during component fabrication, factory acceptance testing, and facility site assembly to resolve dimensional variances.
Required Qualifications & Experience Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical engineering discipline.
Experience: 5+ years of progressive engineering experience managing complex 3 D CAD models, plant spatial layouts, and mechanical integration for major industrial, nuclear, or aerospace facilities.
CAD & PLM Software Mastery: Expert proficiency in enterprise 3 D CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM/PDM) software suites (e.g., Siemens NX, Teamcenter, CATIA, Solid Works, or Windchill).
Manufacturing & GD&T; Expertise: Deep technical command of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, precision machining tolerances, welded pressure vessel standards, and manufacturing drawing approval workflows.
Metrology & Configuration Skills: Proven track record in configuration management (ECO/ECR), spatial envelope control, and integrating 3 D laser scan / CMM metrology data for as-built CAD reconciliation.
