/"We are searching for an exceptional Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team This role is perfect for someone passionate about building and deploying scalable AI-enabled full-stack applications, robust APIs, and integrating contemporary AI and agentic workflows into our systems to ultimately make a significant impact across our projects. Looking forward to seeing how you'll help drive our engineering team forward/" – Greg Burlet, Director of Engineering About Amii Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. Our cross-functional teams work collaboratively with Alberta-based businesses and organizations to build AI capacity and translate scientific advancement into industry adoption and economic impact.
About the Role
The Software Engineer plays a key role in architecting, building, and maintaining scalable full-stack applications and AI-integrated software solutions. As a key technical team member, the Software Engineer will collaborate with engineering leaders and cross-functional teams to design robust REST APIs, manage database systems, implement up-to-date frontend UI/UX interfaces, leverage automated agentic coding tools, build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines using vector databases and AI orchestration frameworks, and deploy and maintain core Kubernetes services. The Software Engineer will work with cross-functional product and engineering teams to design and deliver high-quality, production-ready software systems. Specifically, this engineer will focus on end-to-end full-stack development,
including secure API design, database architecture, network protocols, responsive UI/UX frontends, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines. Additionally, the role is responsible for integrating state-of-the-art AI capabilities, such as RAG architectures using vector databases and orchestration frameworks, and embedding agentic developer workflows into the software development lifecycle. In addition to hands-on technical architecture and execution, the Software Engineer will contribute to the strategic technical vision, working alongside the Director, Engineering to establish engineering best practices, coding standards, automated CI/CD workflows, and playbooks for scaling full-stack AI applications. The position focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:
- AI & Agentic Systems Integration
- Technical Coaching & Collaboration Required Skills / Expertise
Key Responsibilities
- Architects and develops scalable RESTful and GraphQL APIs, backend microservices, and secure database schemas for high-availability production environments
- Establishes automated testing suites (unit, integration, end-to-end) and robust CI/CD pipelines to guarantee code reliability and seamless deployments
- Helps configure networking, API gateways, load balancing, and security protocols to ensure resilient data flow across distributed software systems and microservices alongside DevOps
- Diagnoses and resolves technical debt,
performance bottlenecks, and infrastructure issues across backend and frontend platforms.
- Participates in sprint planning and other agile methodology ceremonies.
- Builds and optimizes retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines using vector databases such as Weaviate and Qdrant.
- Integrates advanced LLM orchestration frameworks to construct complex agentic workflows and multi-step reasoning applications.
- Leverages and standardizes automated agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate software development and refactoring.
- Collaborates across internal Amii teams to identify opportunities and deploy agentic solutions that support core business operations.
- Designs data indexing, embedding, and retrieval strategies to deliver fast, highly accurate context for AI-driven software features.
- Monitors and tunes agentic pipeline latency and system costs in production environments.
- Collaborates with product management and AI researchers to translate complex AI models into scalable software products.
- Ensures data privacy, access control, and regulatory compliance across databases and AI vector stores.
- Contributes to technical design reviews, system architecture discussions, and code reviews to maintain high engineering standards.
- Mentors adjacent machine learning engineers on industry-standard software development methodologies and best practices.
- Partners with product managers, UX designers, and external stakeholders to deliver features on schedule and within technical scope.
- Partners with the Director, Engineering to establish long-term technological roadmap and software development strategies.
