About the opportunity
Our client, a leading Canadian commercial insurer, is hiring an Underwriting Manager to lead a team of underwriters in its mid-market segment. This is a people-first leadership role. You will coach and develop a team, steward a book of construction and contracting accounts with a focus on retention, and partner closely with a broker network.

You will lead 6 to 10 underwriters, from associate through to specialist (subject matter expert) level, and report to a Director.

What you’ll do

Lead, coach and mentor a team of underwriters at varied experience levels, including performance management, development planning and career growth

Oversee full-cycle underwriting of mid-market accounts (typically $10K to $250K in premium), including evaluation, selection, negotiation, pricing and documentation

Drive retention and profitable growth of an established construction and contracting portfolio

Build and maintain strong broker relationships through regular in-person meetings and responsive,



consistent communication

Collaborate with Actuarial, Claims and other internal partners

Guide technical decisions across the team and support operational change

What you bring

Proven people leadership (2+ years leading underwriters), including coaching, mentoring and the day-to-day HR side of management

Robust construction and contracting underwriting experience in the mid-market

Technical depth in commercial package: commercial property and CGL, with COC an asset.

Solid broker relationship skills and a strong service orientation

CIP, FCIP or equivalent designation completed or in progress

Compensation and rewards

Base salary: $130,000–$140,000 , plus a 15% annual bonus
