Garrett Contracting
Calgary
We're looking for someone who can run the job - and the equipment.
Garrett Contracting Ltd. is a growing Calgary-based excavation and civil construction company seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Operations Manager / Heavy Equipment Operator.
We're looking for someone who understands construction because they've actually done the work.
You know your way around an excavator, understand how to manage crews and equipment, can read plans, solve problems and recognize what needs to be done without waiting for instructions.
You might currently be an experienced excavation superintendent, working foreman, lead operator, operations supervisor or construction manager.
This is not a desk-only management position.
Some days you'll be coordinating projects, directing crews and meeting with clients. Other days you may be operating equipment, organizing equipment moves, troubleshooting mechanical issues or helping estimate upcoming work.
We're looking for someone who's comfortable doing both.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations & Leadership
- Oversee multiple excavation and civil construction projects throughout the Calgary area.
- Coordinate field crews, equipment, materials and scheduling.
- Operate excavators, loaders, skid steers and other heavy equipment as required.
- Provide leadership and direction to field employees.
- Identify and resolve operational problems independently.
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, contractors and site supervisors.
Equipment & Fleet Operations
- Oversee equipment utilization, maintenance and readiness.
- Diagnose equipment issues, assist with practical repairs and coordinate maintenance.
- Organize equipment mobilization and transportation between job sites.
- Operate company trucks and haul equipment where appropriately licensed and qualified.
- Ensure safe operating practices and applicable company requirements are followed.
Project Management & Business Operations
- Read and interpret construction drawings, elevations, grades and specifications.
- Oversee excavation, earthworks, underground services and related civil construction activities.
- Monitor project progress, production quantities and job costs.
- Identify extra work, changed conditions and potential change orders.
- Coordinate with administration to ensure accurate field documentation and billing.
- Assist with estimating, quoting and identifying new project opportunities.
- Help improve operating efficiency and support continued company growth.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive, demonstrable experience operating excavators and heavy construction equipment.
- Robust background in excavation, earthworks, underground utilities or civil construction.
- Experience supervising employees and coordinating construction activities.
- Ability and willingness to continue operating equipment as part of a senior management role.
- Practical understanding of equipment maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings and work independently.
- Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills.
- Self-motivated, resourceful and capable of taking ownership of operational responsibilities.
- Valid driver's licence.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Valid Class 1 driver's licence, with experience driving dump trucks, hauling equipment or operating lowbed trailers.
- Class 3 driver's licence.
- Experience managing multiple crews and job sites simultaneously.
- Estimating, job costing and change-order experience.
- Hands-on equipment repair experience.
- Previous experience managing or operating a small construction business.
A Class 1 licence is a significant asset, but we're willing to consider an exceptional candidate with the right equipment operating and leadership experience who doesn't hold one.
What We Offer
- Starting salary of $120,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
- Employee benefits.
- Company vehicle or vehicle allowance.
- Full-time position working on projects in the Calgary area.
- A senior role working directly with company ownership.
- Significant responsibility and the opportunity to help shape the company's growth.
Who Will Succeed Here?
Someone who takes initiative.
Someone who can see a problem and solve it.
Someone who's comfortable managing people but isn't above jumping into a machine to get the job done.
Someone who understands that good construction management is about keeping crews productive, equipment working, customers satisfied and projects profitable.
If that sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.
Pay: $120,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Extended health care
- On-site parking
Application question(s):
- How many years of hands-on excavator operating experience do you have?
- Do you currently hold a valid Class 1 or Class 3 driver's licence? If so, which class?
- Are you willing to operate heavy equipment as part of management duties?
