POSITION OVERVIEW

Peerless Electric is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to join our Design & Engineering team at our manufacturing facility in Cornwall, Ontario.

We are looking for a hands-on, technically strong professional who can develop practical product designs, solve manufacturing challenges, and contribute to the development and improvement of our lighting products.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical product design and manufacturing, particularly in areas such as sheet metal fabrication, aluminum extrusions, metal enclosures, mechanical assemblies, or electromechanical products.

Previous experience in the lighting industry is an asset, but not required. We value strong mechanical design skills, manufacturing knowledge, sound engineering judgment, and practical problem-solving abilities.

This position involves working closely with our engineering, manufacturing, production, and sales teams to develop reliable, cost-effective, and manufacturable products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Product Design & Development

- Develop mechanical designs for new products, custom lighting solutions, and modifications to existing products.
- Create accurate 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, detailed part drawings, and assembly documentation using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Design sheet metal components, aluminum extrusions, mechanical assemblies, mounting systems, and product enclosures.
- Apply design-for-manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles to improve product quality, production efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Review existing designs, identify potential issues, and recommend practical improvements or alternative technical solutions.

Component Selection & Product Compliance

- Evaluate and select mechanical and electromechanical components based on product specifications, functionality, reliability, availability, and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with the engineering team on the integration of LED modules, drivers, wiring, connectors, and other electrical components into mechanical assemblies.
- Incorporate applicable UL and CSA safety and certification requirements into new product designs.
- Support product testing, design verification, technical documentation, and certification activities in coordination with the engineering team and certification partners.

Manufacturing & Technical Support

- Prepare and maintain accurate Engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical drawings, and product documentation within PDM systems.
- Develop prototypes and mock-ups to evaluate product functionality, assembly, and manufacturing feasibility.
- Work directly with production personnel to troubleshoot manufacturing and assembly issues.
- Prepare technical shop drawings, installation instructions, and supporting documentation for standard and custom products.
- Provide independent technical reviews, alternative design solutions, and additional engineering support when needed.
- Collaborate with Sales, Manufacturing, and Production to ensure designs meet customer requirements and production capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial/Product Design, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

- 5+ years of relevant experience in mechanical product design, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, assemblies, and production drawings.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, aluminum extrusion, machining, plastics, and mechanical assembly.
- Demonstrated ability to create and maintain accurate manufacturing drawings, technical documentation, and Bills of Materials.
- Experience selecting mechanical or electromechanical components and integrating them into finished products.
- Familiarity with UL/CSA product safety requirements or other relevant certification standards is an asset.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to develop practical, cost-effective design solutions.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and collaborate effectively with other departments.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

- Previous experience designing lighting fixtures, LED products, electrical enclosures, or electromechanical equipment.
- Experience supporting new product development from concept through prototyping and production.
