Skilled Labourer – Halifax Shipyard

Location: Halifax, NS
Pay: $36.00 per hour, paid weekly
Employment: Full-time, project-based
Schedule: Monday to Friday, day and night shifts as required

Job Description

Matrix HR is recruiting experienced Skilled Labourers to support operations at Irving Shipbuilding's Halifax Shipyard.

We are seeking reliable, safety-conscious individuals with hands-on industrial experience, particularly in grinding, surface preparation, hand and power tool operation, and general shipyard support.

Successful candidates must complete the required Government of Canada security screening and meet all site safety requirements before starting work.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist tradespeople with vessel construction, maintenance, material handling, and equipment preparation.
- Perform surface preparation, including grinding, sanding, scraping, solvent cleaning, rust removal, and coating preparation.
- Safely operate grinders and other hand and power tools in accordance with training and site procedures.
- Perform Fire Watch and Confined Space Watch duties when trained and authorized.
- Support industrial cleaning, coating preparation, preservation, and general housekeeping.
- Follow all applicable shipyard safety procedures and PPE requirements.

Qualifications

- At least one year of relevant industrial, construction, manufacturing, or shipyard experience preferred.
- Practical experience with grinders, hand and power tools, and surface preparation strongly preferred.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in an industrial setting.




- Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to complete the required security screening.
- Able to commute reliably to Halifax Shipyard.

Safety Training and Certifications

Candidates must possess or be prepared to complete the applicable safety requirements, including:

- Fall Protection / Fall Arrest
- Confined Space Awareness / Entry
- WHMIS
- Respiratory Protection and Fit Testing
- Fire Watch / Hot Work Safety
- Lead Awareness
- Hand and Power Tool Safety
- Grinder Safety

Online Training: Matrix HR will provide links and instructions for Fire Watch, Lead Awareness, and Hand and Power Tool Safety courses.

The costs of these courses are intended to be deducted from the employee's first paycheque, subject to applicable employment standards and any required authorization. Course costs and deduction details will be communicated before enrolment.

Additional training and respirator fit-testing requirements will be confirmed before deployment.

Mandatory Security Screening

All candidates must successfully complete the applicable Government of Canada security screening before receiving authorization to work at Halifax Shipyard.

This process may include:

- Personnel Screening (330-23) and Controlled Goods documentation.
- Fingerprinting and submission of a Document Control Number (DCN).




- Verification of identification, employment, and residential history.
- Additional background checks or documentation as required.

Applicants must be prepared to provide five years of continuous residential and employment history, including periods spent outside Canada.

Screening timelines vary, and additional verification may be required. Completing paperwork or fingerprinting does not guarantee clearance, employment, or an immediate start date.

Compensation and Benefits

- $36.00 per hour, paid weekly

Referral Bonus: A $200 referral bonus is available for eligible referrals who are successfully hired and complete at least one week on Matrix HR payroll. Additional conditions apply.
