Senior Geologist

Our client is looking a Senior Geologistto join the growing team in Calgary, Alberta. The Senior Geologist is accountable end-to-end for assigned development areas: reservoir characterization, greenfield (FDP/FID) and brownfield pad development, active geosteering support during execution, start-up and production geology, and mid to long range development planning. The role operates within an integrated GGRE (geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering) team and collaborates closely with D&C;, E&C;, Regulatory and HQ technical teams.

Responsibilities:

Reservoir Characterization and Subsurface Interpretation

- Self-perform detailed geological evaluations including stratigraphic correlation, structure, isopach, facies and depositional modelling, and reservoir quality attributes to characterize and high grade areas of interest for near- and medium-term development
- Map and quantify reservoir impairments (bottom water, top water, top gas, lean zones, breccia, baffles and mud plugs) and define their impact on well placement, operating strategy and forecast
- Integrate core, well log, petrophysical, 3D/4D seismic and production data into cohesive depositional models; direct geomodel inputs and QA/QC geomodelling and simulation outputs
- Deliver accurate EBIP/HPVH volume calculations, geogrids and pay mapping for Reserves, Contingent Resource, WP&B; and Strategic Plan processes

Greenfield and Brownfield Development

- Own the geological scope for assigned FDP and FID projects, including wellpair trajectory design, recoverable volume recommendations and pad layout optimization
- Identify and mature brownfield opportunities that offset base decline and deliver short cycle, low cost production
- Present to internal peer review and HQ Expert Review panels, providing clear geological justification for location, trajectory and horizon selection in support of project sanction
- Define and justify annual Oil Sands Evaluation (winter) program locations, coring, logging and testing scope to reduce subsurface uncertainty ahead of decision gates

Execution and Operations Support

- Provide active geosteering support to operations and wellsite geologists advising on decisions carrying material production, cost and safety impacts
- Deliver geological prognoses,

subsurface risk identification and post-drill lookbacks, ensuring all subsurface hazards are clearly communicated to D&C; teams

Reservoir and Production Management

- Act as production geologist for assigned producing pads: analyze geological, production and 4D data with geophysics and reservoir engineering to recommend well and pad optimizations
- Support new pad start-up, circulation and troubleshooting, and provide geological input into operating strategy changes and production issues
- Support corporate processes with technical evaluations including Reserves and Contingent Resources, annual workplan annbudget, monthly outlooks and the Strategic Plan

Technical Assurance, Continuous Improvement and Knowledge Sharing

- As a senior subject matter expert, participate in the department technical assurance and peer review process, including review of resource and reserve estimation methodologies and assumptions
- Identify, document and consistently apply reservoir characterization workflows, including core analysis and testing standards
- Develop and share best practices within the geoscience team; contribute to technical conferences and lessons learned processes
- Bring forward innovative, value-added opportunities to maximize resource capture, and mentor less experienced geoscientists

Qualifications:

Requirements

- Undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Geology or related Geosciences discipline
- Professional designation with APEGA (P.Geol) in good standing
- 10 or more years of relevant industry experience, including substantial experience in subsurface resource evaluation
- Demonstrated SAGD wellpair planning and execution experience, including active geosteering.
- Experience mapping reservoir impairments (bottom water, top water, top gas, lean zones and baffles) and quantifying their impact on well placement and production

- Strong knowledge of clastic depositional environments and McMurray Formation reservoir architecture
- Strong understanding of petrophysics, geophysics and resource mapping, and the ability to integrate them into a single subsurface story
- Strong computer mapping and interpretation skills; proficiency with Petrel and Petrel Studio
- Working knowledge of the upstream oil sands business model and of reserves/resource classification standards
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to senior leadership and external stakeholders
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Preferred

- Experience in thermal oil projects would be considered an asset
- Operational experience drilling SAGD brownfield and greenfield horizontal wells
- Experience with geomodelling and reservoir simulation workflows, and with QA/QC of third-party models
- Familiarity with caprock characterization, fault analysis and geomechanical inputs
- Experience with AER regulatory processes (Directive 23, Directive 54, scheme amendments) and with regulatory submissions
- Skills in developing custom data tools and analysis in R and/or Python; proficiency with Power BI
- Experience working with international or head-office technical teams

Desired Skills and Attributes

- Displays a strong personal commitment to Health, Safety and Workplace (HSE).
- Displays honesty and integrity in all interactions and decisions
- Works collaboratively and actively builds networks
- Shares knowledge and participates in joint initiatives, peer reviews and problem-solving
