Company Description

Maddox Design Studio is a growing architectural design firm based in Muskoka, Ontario. We specialize in custom homes and cottages, renovations, additions, and small commercial projects throughout Muskoka and the surrounding area.

We are looking for an experienced freelance Architectural Technologist or Residential Designer to collaborate with us on an ongoing, project-by-project basis. This is an opportunity to build a long-term working relationship with a growing studio, with the potential for a consistent flow of projects as our workload expands.

Role Description

The successful candidate will work closely with the principal designer on a wide range of residential architectural projects. You will work from site measurements, photographs, client requirements, and project briefs provided by Maddox Design Studio to develop residential designs and complete permit drawing packages.

We are looking for someone who can work independently, interpret project requirements, develop practical design solutions, and produce accurate, well-coordinated drawings with minimal day-to-day direction.

The principal designer will remain the primary client contact and will manage client communication, project coordination, design reviews, and municipal permit submissions.

This is a flexible, remote freelance chance with work assigned according to project availability and suitability.

The successful candidate must have experience working with the Ontario Building Code OBC.

Please note that we are a Revit-based firm. Only candidates with a high degree of proficiency in Revit will be considered.

Responsibilities

- Prepare architectural drawings and permit application packages.
- Prepare existing condition drawings from site measurements.
- Develop design drawings based on project photos and written scopes of work.
- Produce detailed construction drawings and drawing sets using Revit.




- Incorporate relevant Ontario Building Code requirements and applicable zoning and building constraints into the design process.
- Coordinate drawing information to maintain consistency and accuracy throughout each package.
- Incorporate feedback and revisions following design reviews.
- Identify missing information, potential design conflicts, and issues requiring clarification before proceeding.
- Deliver organized Revit files and final PDF drawing sets according to agreed project milestones.

Qualifications and Experience

- Diploma or degree in Architectural Technology, Architecture, or a related field.
- Strong proficiency in Autodesk Revit (required).
- Working knowledge of Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code and experience preparing residential permit drawings.
- Experience producing complete construction drawing packages, including plans, elevations, sections, details, and permit documentation.
- Strong understanding of residential construction methods, materials, and detailing
- Ability to interpret site measurements, photographs, and written design requirements.
- Familiarity with Ontario municipal permitting processes; experience working within the Muskoka region is an asset.
- Excellent drafting, detailing, and problem-solving skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with the project team.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.

This is an independent freelance position. Applicants must have:

- Their own computer capable of running Revit efficiently.
- A valid Revit license and any other licensed software required to perform the work.
- A reliable internet connection for remote collaboration.

Compensation and Work Arrangement

- Freelance, independent contractor arrangement.
- Project-based compensation, negotiated according to experience, complexity, and scope.
- Flexible working hours and remote work.
- Potential for recurring assignments and an ongoing working relationship as the studio grows.
- Workload will vary according to active projects and business demand.

Candidates should indicate their preferred compensation structure, whether hourly or fixed fee per project.
