We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Hydraulic Cylinder Design Engineer to join our growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end design, development, and optimization of custom hydraulic cylinders. You will bridge the gap between initial customer specifications and shop-floor manufacturing, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and operational performance.The ideal candidate possesses deep technical expertise in fluid power mechanics, robust 3D CAD modeling skills, and a practical understanding of machining and manufacturing processes.

Core Responsibilities

- Engineering Design: Design and detail custom single-acting, double-acting, telescopic, and heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders from scratch based on client application requirements.
- Technical Calculations: Perform critical engineering calculations including column buckling, hoop stress, burst pressure, fatigue life, flow velocity, and seal friction limits.
- CAD & Drafting: Create precise 3D models and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings using [SolidWorks / Autodesk Inventor] utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T;).
- Component Selection: Specify and select appropriate materials (chroming options, barrel alloys), seal configurations (Viton, Polyurethane, PTFE), porting, and mounting styles (clevis, trunnion, flange).
- Simulation & FEA: Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to validate structural integrity, eliminate stress concentrations, and optimize weight-to-strength ratios.
- BOM Management: Generate accurate, complete Bills of Materials (BOMs)



and structured data configurations within our ERP/MRP system.
- Production Support: Collaborate closely with the machine shop and assembly teams to troubleshoot manufacturing bottlenecks, review prototypes, and facilitate root-cause analysis for warranty or field failures.

Qualifications & Skills

- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 3+ years of dedicated experience in the design and manufacture of hydraulic cylinders, actuators, or heavy fluid power equipment.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced mastery of SolidWorks / Autodesk Inventor and integrated PDM systems.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of fluid power standards (ISO, NFPA, SAE), fluid properties, seal geometries, and surface finishing techniques (honing, grinding, induction hardening).
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting technical data to internal teams and external customers.
- Professional Affiliations (Asset): Eligible for or registered as a P.Eng with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO); International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) certification (e.g., CFPHS) is a major asset.
