Intermediate Interior Designer

Residential & Commercial Design | New Builds, Renovations and Complete Furnishing Packages
Newmarket, Ontario

About Niche Decor

Niche Decor is a full service interior design studio with a 10,000 sq ft designer showroom in Newmarket, Ontario. For more than 30 years, we have created approachable, timeless homes thoughtfully tailored to how our clients live.

Our projects range from renovations and custom home builds to complete furnishing packages. Our team develops space plans, drawings, material and finish selections, cabinetry concepts, lighting, window treatments and furnishings, carrying the design through to installation.

Our showroom, supplier relationships and extensive resource library give our designers access to a wide range of quality furnishings, fabrics, flooring, tile, fixtures and finishes.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Intermediate Interior Designer who can take an approved design direction and independently develop the drawings, selections, specifications and presentations needed to move a project forward.

Working under our Senior Design & Creative Director, you will take ownership of assigned projects and responsibilities from initial planning through installation. Your work will include furniture sourcing, complete furnishing packages, and material and finish selections for renovations and new builds.

This position requires established, practical experience in both residential furnishing and renovation design. You should already be comfortable sourcing furniture, selecting complementary materials, assessing scale and proportion, preparing accurate drawings, and working within client budgets.

We will train you in Niche Decor’s systems, supplier resources, pricing procedures and presentation standards. Once trained, you will be expected to organize your workload, research and develop suitable options, check your work, and complete assigned tasks independently. Senior guidance and design reviews are part of our process, but you must be able to move work forward without step by step direction.

This is a busy studio with multiple projects underway at once. Success requires sound design judgment, accuracy, initiative and consistent follow through.

ResponsibilitiesFurniture Sourcing and Furnishing Packages

- Independently source furniture and develop cohesive furnishing packages that reflect the client’s needs, budget and approved design direction.
- Select and specify upholstery, fabrics, case goods, lighting, rugs, window treatments, art and accessories.
- Assess dimensions, scale, proportion, furniture layouts and clearances to ensure selections work together and fit the space.
- Research supplier offerings, customization options, pricing and availability, and propose suitable alternatives when needed.
- Prepare complete product specifications, including dimensions, finishes, fabrics, configurations and ordering details.

Materials, Finishes and Technical Design

- Use our resource library and supplier resources to develop coordinated selections for flooring, tile,

countertops, plumbing fixtures, hardware, cabinetry finishes, paint and other architectural details.
- Evaluate selections for suitability, durability, budget and their relationship to the overall design.
- Attend site visits, take accurate measurements, and produce floor plans, elevations and detailed drawings in AutoCAD.
- Prepare clear selection schedules and specifications for client review and project execution.
- Check dimensions, drawings, quantities and specifications before submitting work for review.
- Communicate with builders, suppliers and trades on assigned project details, identifying questions or discrepancies early.

Presentations, Clients and Project Coordination

- Attend consultations and presentations, recording client requirements, decisions and feedback accurately.
- Prepare polished PowerPoint presentations that clearly communicate the design, selections and recommendations.
- Price products according to company guidelines and follow through on approvals and required deposits.
- Manage assigned tasks across multiple projects, keeping deadlines, outstanding decisions and next steps organized.
- Maintain accurate time tracking, client logs, correspondence, drawings and project files.
- Keep clients informed about project progress and product ETAs, and coordinate installations with our service team.
- Balance client budgets with company profitability through thoughtful sourcing and accurate pricing.
- Keep senior designers informed of progress and bring forward potential issues with proposed solutions.
- Participate in installations, styling and project photoshoots.
- Support and mentor junior team members and summer interns as needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must demonstrate the following through their professional experience, portfolio and interview responses:

- A bachelor’s degree in Interior Design.
- A minimum of three years of professional residential interior design experience, with hands on responsibility for sourcing, selections, drawings and project execution.
- Demonstrated experience independently sourcing furniture and developing complete residential furnishing packages.
- Demonstrated experience selecting and coordinating materials and finishes for residential renovations or new builds, including flooring, tile, cabinetry finishes, countertops, fixtures and hardware.
- A strong understanding of furniture dimensions, scale, proportion, space planning, fabric suitability and finish coordination.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, including the ability to produce accurate floor plans and elevations independently.

- Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint and experience preparing professional client presentations.
- Experience preparing detailed product specifications, selection schedules and pricing.
- The ability to interpret a design brief, research appropriate options and present well considered recommendations.
- Proven ability to manage several projects and deadlines with limited day to day supervision after onboarding.
- Excellent attention to detail, including a consistent process for checking measurements, drawings and specifications.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills and a confident, professional manner with clients, suppliers and trades.
- A portfolio showing your professional residential work and clearly identifying your contribution to each project.

Years of experience alone do not establish fit for this role. We are looking for evidence that you can carry out these responsibilities accurately, thoughtfully and independently at an intermediate level.

Additional Assets

- Knowledge of furniture construction, custom upholstery and made to order furnishings.
- Experience developing cabinetry concepts and detailed millwork drawings.
- Experience coordinating client installations.
- Familiarity with additional design or rendering software.
- Experience supporting or mentoring junior designers.

Our hiring process includes:

- Three interview stages.
- A detailed discussion of your portfolio, experience and individual contributions.
- Reference checks.

Please allow several weeks from application to final decision.
