Term: Early November 2026 to mid-April 2027, with the possibility of extension dependent on funding.
Overview
We are seeking a supervisor to support, manage, and work alongside two neurodivergent work placement participants - you three will be hosting shows on CIVL Radio, recording / editing / publishing videos for social media using the Osmo Pocket 4 Vlogging Camera, hosting a grant-writing workshop for local youth, and running various community events such as mini concerts at day programs. The two participants will be learning and taking courses online as well as working alongside you to perform their duties.
This position is perfect for a young graduate of social work, someone who is into video production and voiceover work / radio, and the world of non-profits.
About Mayday Club
Mayday Club is a grassroots, neurodivergent youth-directed project based out of Abbotsford. Our organization began 10 years ago, when a small group of youth in the Fraser Valley wanted to enrich the lives and career prospects of neurodivergent and disabled kids.
Mayday
Club is now a fast-growing and thriving community project that stays true to its roots, and remains directed by a steering committee of neurodivergent and disabled Fraser Valley youth, and is directed by a board made up of self-advocates and family members. We run a 25-voice youth choir made up of neurodivergent and disabled people under 30 years of age, a dance team for neurodivergent kids, we host an annual silent disco and an annual talent show, and we help empower local youth to run their own mini programs, such as art classes and boardgame meetups. Everything we do serves to provide neurodivergent and disabled youth with meaningful opportunities for growth, and to educate the public on the power of inclusion and how it benefits all of society.
Mayday Club empowers neurodivergent and disabled youth through initiatives that nurture authentic self-expression, artistic growth, leadership skills, and connection. Our programs combat isolation, build confidence, and promote inclusion in our community. We inspire meaningful change by challenging and reshaping the existing narrative around human diversity.
About the Position
This position is part of a new project funded by the federal and provincial governments, and through Work BC.
The Community Empowerment
Supervisor will be responsible for directly managing, supervising, and assisting two work placement participants - neurodivergent youth looking to get into the fields of non-profit management, social media, and / or radio broadcasting. You will be working closely with the project manager, who will provide training to you, go over general goals, tasks, and deadlines, and then it is up to you and the participants to come up with ways that work for you three to make them happen!
You are not working as a care-giver for the participants, you will be basically a mentor to them, and help them stay on task, working alongside them and making this cool community project come to life! We are going to be very picky about who we hire, because we need someone who can truly uphold our values and treat the two young participants as young up-and coming members of the workforce with a lot to offer, and not as people who need to be silenced and made to conform with normality.
Primary Responsibilities of the Community Empowerment Supervisor
- Work with the Mayday Club team to set goals, tasks, deadlines, and workplans to fulfill the goals of the project
- Familiarize yourself with the project goals and timeline, and help to implement it
- Build consistent, respectful relationships with the two work placement participants
- Supervise and manage the two work placement participants - they will require additional support, patience, and problem-solving compared to typical workers. It will be your duty to make this experience possible for them. The purpose of this is for them to learn and grow, make mistakes, be authentic, and learn what it is like to have a job. You might need to help them with tasks that seem simple but would be challenging for a neurodivergent person, such as coordinating ways to get to and from work (but you are not responsible for driving them), how to stay on task, how to communicate respectfully, etc - and it is your duty to support them through this with patience and kindness
- Help enroll the work placement participants in the online courses that they are taking, and assist and supervise them as they work through them
- Help the work placement participants stay on-task and happy
- Help organize project steps, timelines, materials, budgets, and events in collaboration with the Mayday Club team
- Be the primary point of contact for community partners, such as CIVL Radio team, day programs, interviewees, etc. - but assist, facilitate and include the two participants in all communications.
- Help identify barriers to success that each of the participants face, and work with them and the Mayday Club team to overcome them
- Have fun and enjoy the experience - at the root of everything is joy, and we want you and the participants to be happy to show up to work. Keep the morale up. Should you guys do your work at a coffee shop today? Should you go for a walk at Mill Lake as you meet instead of sitting in the office? Should you ask for a small budget to decorate the office? That kind of thing.
- Learn to do all the tasks that the participants need to do, and teach them to do those tasks. Ex. learn to record and edit video, and then teach it to them.
- Participate in all the same tasks that the two participants do - you should host the show with them, edit video with them, study with them, basically be a 3rd participant, don't just assign them a task and then check in on them after a while. See next section for participant tasks:
Primary Responsibilities / Tasks of the Two Participants - "Community Empowerment Coordinators"
- Take courses online and finish them according to set deadlines: CIVL Radio Operator course, professional communication course, neurodiversity in the workplace course, social media management course, grant writing course
- Host a radio show on CIVL Radio twice a week in-person at UFV in Abbotsford
- Organize and pre-plan the radio show - communicate with community partners, organizations, and plan out discussions and topics - communicate this to partners in advance.
- Learn to record and edit video footage
- Record video footage of Mayday Club programs, edit the footage, and post it online
- Plan a social media campaign highlighting accessibility in the Fraser Valley - plan out ideas, contact interviewees, record, edit, and post the video yourselves
- Run a grant-writing course for local youth and / or create an online grant-writing toolkit for neurodivergent youth (depending on community interest)
Qualifications and Experience
- Criminal records check and vulnerable sector search
- Experience working with or alongside neurodivergent / disabled people (whether professionally or personally)
- Experience supporting youth, youth-led initiatives, community projects, or peer leadership
- Skills in digital media production, including video creation and editing, with skills in photography, social media, graphic design, or digital art
- Ability to translate complex ideas and program learning into explicit, accessible content.
- Strong facilitation, relationship-building, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, balancing direct youth work
Preferred:
- Valid Class 5 license, and reliable vehicle
- A degree or diploma in the Human/Social Service field
Compensation and Benefits $25.00 - $27.00 per hour for 30 hours per week, with 1 unpaid week off at Christmas The position is funded until mid-April 2026, with the possibility of extension dependent on whether or not we are approved to run this program again after.
Work Environment
You will be working in a combination of remote and in-person settings. Your schedule is up to you and the two participants to work out together, as long as the tasks are getting done. Ideally, a 50/50 mix at minimum between in-person and remote work would be ideal. When working remotely, you should be on video call with the participants for the entire time.
We are renting a large office space for you three at the Abbotsford Airport, where you can work alongside each other on a day-to-day bases, and hold meetings with the project supervisor. You are also more than welcome to choose to do the day's work at a coffee shop etc - it is very flexible and self-directed.
You will be driving to some in-person work locations, such as CIVL Radio studio, some day-programs where we are going to be hosting events, to meet up with community members you will be interviewing for the social media campaign, etc.
