WIRE Construction

Wire Construction is seeking a Construction Safety Coordinator to support the day-to-day delivery of our Health & Safety Program across our construction operations in Calgary and surrounding areas.

Wire is a growing civil and earthworks contractor working across commercial, residential and infrastructure projects. Our operations include earthworks, excavation, underground utilities and site servicing, demolition, trucking, grading and heavy equipment operations.

This is a hands-on position combining field safety support with safety administration and coordination. The successful candidate will work closely with Wire's management team, superintendents, foremen and field crews to help ensure our safety program is consistently implemented across the organization.

We are looking for someone who enjoys being in the field and working directly with construction crews while also being organized and comfortable managing the documentation, training records, inspections and reporting required to support a strong safety program.

This position will serve as Wire's primary day-to-day internal safety resource, with management and external safety specialists available to support more complex or specialized HSE matters as required.

Key Responsibilities

Field Safety Support

- Maintain a regular presence across Wire's active construction sites.
- Conduct routine worksite safety inspections and document findings.
- Work with superintendents, foremen and crews to identify hazards and appropriate controls.
- Review Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), toolbox meetings, equipment inspections and other required site documentation.
- Monitor safe work practices relating to excavation, trenching, ground disturbance, heavy equipment, trucking, underground utilities and other civil construction activities.
- Identify safety deficiencies and work with field leadership to develop practical corrective actions.
- Follow up on corrective actions to ensure they are completed.
- Assist project teams with safety planning for higher-risk or non-routine activities.
- Participate in project start-up and pre-construction meetings when required.
- Conduct periodic office, shop and yard inspections.
- Assist with emergency response drills and site-specific safety initiatives.

Safety Program Administration

- Coordinate the day-to-day administration of Wire's Health & Safety Program.
- Maintain safety documentation within Wire's digital safety platform and SharePoint/Teams environment.
- Maintain company safety forms, records, policies, Protected Work Practices and Safe Operating Procedures.
- Assist with updates to JHAs, SWPs, SOPs, Emergency Response Plans and Site-Specific Safety Plans.
- Ensure required safety documentation remains current and readily accessible.
- Assist with client safety questionnaires, prequalification submissions and project-specific safety documentation.
- Support management in implementing updates to Wire's Health & Safety Program.

Training & Employee Records

- Coordinate safety orientations for new employees.
- Maintain employee training and certification records.
- Monitor certification expiry dates and provide advance notice of upcoming requirements.
- Coordinate external safety training as required.
- Assist supervisors with identifying employee training and competency requirements.
- Develop or coordinate toolbox talks and safety communications based on current operations, incidents and identified trends.

Inspections, Incidents & Corrective Actions

- Assist with workplace incident and near-miss investigations.
- Gather information, photographs, statements and documentation required for investigations.
- Assist management or external safety advisors with root-cause investigations where required.
- Maintain incident and investigation documentation.
- Track corrective and preventative actions through to completion.
- Communicate relevant lessons learned to field personnel.
- Identify recurring hazards or trends and bring them forward to management.

Safety Statistics & Reporting

- Maintain monthly, quarterly and annual HSE statistics.
- Track leading and lagging safety indicators.
- Prepare regular safety summaries for management.
- Monitor trends in inspections, incidents, near misses and corrective actions.
- Use safety trends to assist with identifying toolbox topics, training requirements and areas requiring additional field attention.

COR & Safety Compliance

- Assist with maintaining Wire's Certificate of Recognition (COR) program.
- Maintain organized and audit-ready safety records throughout the year.
- Assist with preparation for internal and external COR audits.
- Coordinate documentation and corrective actions arising from audits.
- Work with management and external safety advisors to address identified gaps or program improvements.
- Maintain awareness of Alberta Occupational Health & Safety requirements applicable to Wire's operations.

Subcontractor & Contractor Compliance

- Assist with subcontractor safety prequalification and onboarding.
- Collect and maintain subcontractor WCB, insurance, COR and other required safety documentation.
- Monitor subcontractor documentation for expirations or deficiencies.
- Assist field leadership with subcontractor safety compliance while working on Wire projects.
- Maintain applicable client contractor-compliance and prequalification platforms.
- Coordinate routine document uploads and respond to identified platform deficiencies.

WCB & Return-to-Work Administration

- Assist management with WCB reporting and documentation.
- Maintain claim and return-to-work documentation.
- Assist with modified-duty and return-to-work coordination.

- Coordinate information between employees, supervisors, management and external safety/WCB resources as required.
- Maintain appropriate records relating to workplace injuries and claims.

Qualifications & Experience

- 2–4 years of construction safety experience or a combination of relevant safety education and field experience.
- Experience within civil construction, earthworks, underground utilities, roadbuilding or heavy construction is strongly preferred.
- NCSO designation, or willingness to obtain an NCSO designation, is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health & Safety legislation and construction safety requirements.
- Experience conducting worksite inspections and hazard assessments.
- Experience with FLHAs, toolbox meetings, incident documentation and corrective-action tracking.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Comfortable working with electronic safety management systems and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with SharePoint/Teams is considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence and ability to regularly travel between construction projects throughout Calgary and surrounding areas.
- Standard First Aid certification.

Additional certifications such as Ground Disturbance Level II, Leadership for Safety Excellence, Confined Space, Fall Protection, TDG or related construction safety training would be considered assets.

What We're Looking For

This position would be a good fit for a safety professional who has developed a solid foundation in construction safety and is looking for an opportunity to take on greater responsibility within a growing construction company.

You don't need to be a senior Safety Manager. We're looking for someone who is:

- Comfortable spending significant time on active construction sites.
- Approachable and able to build positive relationships with field crews.
- Confident speaking up when something needs to be corrected.
- Organized and capable of keeping safety documentation and training requirements on track.
- Practical and solutions-oriented in their approach to construction safety.
- Able to work independently while knowing when an issue should be escalated to management or a senior safety resource.
- Interested in learning more about civil construction, earthworks and underground utilities.
- Motivated to grow their safety knowledge and responsibilities as Wire continues to grow.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who understands that a strong safety program is built through consistent field presence, communication and follow-through, not paperwork alone.
