Reports To: Executive Director, with day-to-day editorial direction from the Editor-in-Chief The Ontarion is committed to inclusive employment. If at any time during the interview process you require accommodation, please do not hesitate to advise us.
About the Role:
While the work is editorial in nature, the position’s primary focus is coordinating workflows, tracking progress, and ensuring follow-through.
The Editorial Coordinator helps The Ontarion turn editorial plans into completed work. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director, the coordinator keeps assignments moving, follows up with section editors and/or contributors, maintains accurate progress information, and supports copy editing and fact checking.
This role suits someone who takes initiative, writes clearly, notices details, and follows through without repeated reminders. Journalism experience is an asset, but not expected. Strong organization, language skills, research habits, and sound judgment are essential.
Training will be provided on Ontarion processes and procedures.
The ideal candidate:
- Demonstrated ability to organize multiple assignments, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.
- Strong initiative: notices what needs attention, takes appropriate action, and follows through without waiting for repeated instructions.
- Excellent written English,
including a strong grasp of grammar and the ability to identify unclear or inconsistent writing.
- Careful research and verification skills, including the ability to assess sources, distinguish supported facts from assumptions, and recognize when a question needs further review.
- Clear, respectful communication and the confidence to follow up on commitments while maintaining positive relationships with volunteers and colleagues.
- Sound judgment about what can be resolved independently and what requires editorial or management direction.
- Comfort working with shared documents, spreadsheets, and communication tools, and willingness to learn The Ontarion’s systems.
- Relevant experience may come from employment, volunteering, academic work, or other settings. No specific degree is required.
Assets: The following are not required, but would be considered assets:
- Experience with copy editing, proofreading, fact checking, or other work requiring close attention to language and accuracy.
- Experience coordinating projects, supporting executives or teams, or working with volunteers.
- Knowledge of journalism practices, media ethics, Canadian Press style, or student media.
- Experience with Google Workspace, Slack, or editorial production workflows.
Scope and Accountability: The EIC sets editorial direction, priorities,
and standards and makes substantive editorial decisions. The coordinator carries out agreed plans, supports quality control, and keeps the EIC and Executive Director informed. Questions affecting story framing, fairness, ethics, or publication readiness are referred to the EIC.
Success means that story statuses are reliable, contributors know their next steps, delays surface early, and editing and verification queries are followed through to resolution. The position should reduce the routine tracking and follow-up required from the EIC and Executive Director.
