About Kooy Brothers
Kooy Brothers Equipment Ltd. is a family-owned and operated equipment dealership that has been serving customers for more than 40 years. Our business is built on strong relationships, practical problem-solving and people who take pride in getting the job done well.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced, hands-on HR Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day HR function and help us continue building a strong employee experience.
The Opportunity
This is a broad, hands-on HR leadership role for someone who likes being close to the business and is equally comfortable advising managers and owning essential HR and payroll operations.
You’ll serve as Kooy Brothers’ primary HR resource, working directly with our leadership team and managers across the organization. You’ll provide practical HR advice while also owning the processes that keep things running behind the scenes.
One day you might be coaching a manager through an employee issue, the next you could be recruiting a technician, reviewing payroll information, updating a policy or helping a new employee get settled in.
There is support and structure already in place, but plenty of opportunity for the right person to continue improving how we do things.
What You’ll Do
Employee Relations & Manager Support
- Serve as the primary HR resource for employees and managers.
- Coach managers through performance, attendance, conduct and employee relations matters.
- Support progressive discipline, performance improvement and workplace investigations as required.
- Provide practical guidance on employment standards, company policies and HR best practices.
- Support accommodation, disability, return-to-work and leave processes. Help leaders navigate difficult conversations thoughtfully and consistently.
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Manage recruitment across the organization, with a particular focus on skilled trades and operational roles.
- Work with hiring managers to understand staffing needs and develop effective recruitment strategies.
- Manage job postings, candidate screening, interviews, references and offers.
- Coordinate employment agreements and pre-employment requirements. Own the onboarding process and help new employees get off to a solid start.
HR Operations & Payroll
- Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation via our HRIS Humi.
- Manage and maintain Humi, including employee changes, documentation, time-off administration and reporting.
- Support coordination of employee benefits.
- Validate timesheets, hours, overtime, paid time off, new hires, departures and other payroll inputs in collaboration with managers via our HRIS and payroll system(s).
- Prepare employment letters, compensation changes and other employee documentation.
- Manage employee departures and offboarding requirements.
- Serve as the primary payroll administrator, preparing and processing weekly payroll accurately and on time, with Finance responsible for payroll approval, reconciliations, year end and backup coverage.
- Prepare payroll inputs and supporting reports for Finance review and approval; investigate payroll discrepancies and respond to employee pay inquiries. Via our payroll system, prepare Records of Employment and maintain accurate payroll records, providing information and support to Finance for reconciliations and year-end activities.
Policies, Compliance & Health and Safety
- Maintain and update HR policies, procedures and the Employee Handbook.
- Help ensure compliance with Ontario employment legislation and evolving HR requirements.
- Support health and safety administration, including the Joint Health and Safety Committee, incident documentation, WSIB and return-to-work processes.
- Maintain required HR and health and safety records. Identify opportunities to improve HR processes while keeping them practical for the business.
Employee Experience & Organizational Support
- Support employee communication and engagement initiatives.
- Coordinate employee recognition and service awards.
- Help leadership identify emerging people issues and workforce needs.
- Support compensation reviews and other annual HR activities. Build trusted relationships across the organization and be a visible, approachable HR presence for employees.
What You Bring We’re looking for someone with solid HR judgment who can operate independently without making HR unnecessarily complicated.
Ideally, you bring:
- 5+ years of progressive HR generalist experience.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and HR practices.
- Hands-on experience processing payroll independently, with knowledge of payroll deductions, statutory requirements and accurate recordkeeping; working knowledge of benefits, leaves, WSIB and health and safety.
- Experience with HRIS systems and HR administration.
- Experience managing employee relations and performance matters.
- Recruitment experience, ideally including skilled trades, technical or operational roles.
- The confidence to advise managers while knowing when an issue requires additional expertise.
- Excellent organization and follow-through.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Experience with Payworks payroll and Humi HRIS is an asset; comfort learning and administering HR/payroll systems is essential. CHRP or CHRL designation, or progress toward a designation, is also an asset.
Experience working in a privately held, family-owned, dealership, service, construction, manufacturing or similarly operational environment would be particularly valuable. You’ll Probably Like This Role If You...
- Enjoy being a generalist and don’t want to be boxed into one HR specialty.
- Like working directly with employees and managers.
- Can move comfortably between strategic conversations and administrative details.
- Prefer practical solutions over unnecessary process.
- Are comfortable making a recommendation rather than simply presenting options.
- Like building relationships and becoming a trusted part of the business.
- Notice things that need attention and take ownership of getting them done. Want to own both the people side of the business and the operational details that keep HR and payroll running smoothly.
Our Values How we work matters just as much as what we accomplish.
At Kooy Brothers, we aim to:
- Respect and be respected
- Build strong partnerships
- Be agile and responsive
- Fix problems
- Empower success Act with integrity
The HR Manager plays an important role in bringing those values to life in how we hire, support, develop and work with our people.
