Crossroads Market

Calgary

A FEW WORDS BEFORE THE DETAILS

Crossroads Market is not a shopping mall. It is a living, breathing community of vendors, many of whom have been with us for decades, some now in their second or third generation of ownership. We are looking for a Managing Director who understands that the market's success is measured not only in revenue, but in the strength of the relationships between vendors, customers, and the broader Calgary community.

WHO WE ARE

Crossroads Market opened its doors in Calgary decades ago, founded on the idea of giving local entrepreneurs a stepping stone into business. Since then, we have grown into one of the city's largest year-round indoor and outdoor markets. Our vendors offer everything from fresh produce and local meat to antiques, art, and international food. We are proud to be known as "the people's market," and we intend to keep it that way.

WHY THIS ROLE IS OPEN

We are entering a recent chapter. The market has been led by a dedicated general manager, and now we are looking for a Managing Director to take a broader leadership role—overseeing operations, guiding strategic growth, and ensuring that the market remains a vital, welcoming, and financially sustainable institution for the next generation of Calgarians. This is a hybrid position, blending on-site presence with remote strategic work.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Vendor and Community Leadership

- Serve as the primary relationship holder with our vendor community, balancing their individual needs with the overall health of the market
- Maintain the market's unique culture—supportive of small businesses, welcoming to newcomers, and deeply connected to Calgary's diverse communities
- Represent the market to external partners, including local government, community organizations, and the media

Operations and Facility Management

- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the market, including facility maintenance, security, cleaning, and weekend logistics
- Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for vendors and the many visitors who come through our doors each year
- Manage relationships with service providers and contractors

Strategic and Financial Oversight

- Develop and execute a long-term strategic plan for the market, including capital improvements and potential expansion of offerings
- Manage the market's budget, financial reporting, and revenue streams, including vendor fees, events, and partnerships
- Identify opportunities to grow the market's profile and attendance while preserving its character

Team Leadership

- Lead and support the market's administrative and operational staff
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and accountable workplace culture

WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE Experience

- A track record of senior leadership in a market, retail, hospitality, community, or property management environment
- Experience managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, including small business owners, tenants, or vendors
- Financial acumen, including experience with budgeting, reporting, and revenue management

Skills and Qualities

- A genuine appreciation for the role that markets play in a city's cultural and economic life

- The ability to balance commercial pragmatism with a community-first mindset
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to listen as much as to lead
- Comfort with the hands-on nature of market operations—this is not a purely desk-based role
- The flexibility to be present on-site during peak market days and to work remotely for planning and administration

Practical Requirements

- Ability to work a hybrid schedule, with on-site presence required during market operating days and for key meetings
- Reliable high-speed internet and a quiet home workspace for remote work

- Authorization to work in Canada

WHAT THE ROLE PROVIDES

- A hybrid work model that recognizes the need for both on-the-ground presence and focused strategic work

- Competitive compensation based on experience
- The opportunity to lead a beloved Calgary institution with a long history and a clear sense of purpose
- A supportive and collaborative environment, working alongside people who care deeply about the market and its community

- Benefits package as applicable
