A successful candidate should be a strong, dynamic editor and writer who enjoys generating ambitious ideas, producing original journalism, and making smart assignments in a rapid-paced environment.

This role is based in Toronto and will involve working with TIME's global newsroom to coordinate coverage and bring Canadian stories to an international audience. The National Editor should be able to juggle multiple, overlapping deadlines, and be comfortable writing and editing daily news coverage alongside longer-lead features, interviews, and in-depth reporting.

Responsibilities:

- Execute the editorial vision and coverage priorities for TIME Canada
- Write, commission and edit news stories, features, interviews, analysis, and human interest stories covering Canada and its influence globally
- Cultivate relationships with emerging voices as well as a diverse stable of established contributors including journalists, authors, freelancers, columnists, and experts
- Stay on top of the news to find distinctive angles and framings for stories covering Canadian politics, business, culture, technology, climate, and social issues
- Manage a team of staff writers by fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment
- Oversee daily editorial assignments, deadlines, and publishing schedules to ensure consistent, accurate, and timely coverage
- Work with the audience team to optimise stories for maximum impact across all digital platforms
- Collaborate with reporters, editors, photo editors, and others in the TIME newsroom to support and expand Canadian coverage
- Identify opportunities for original reporting, exclusive interviews, and major editorial features that highlight Canadian leaders, innovators, and changemakers

- Promote and abide by our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
- Write and produce editorial content for TIME Canada's tentpole events, including interviews, features, and event coverage
- Develop content for social media platforms, working with the digital and audience teams to expand reach and engagement

Qualifications:

- At least 5 years of editorial experience, preferably for a high-impact media outlet or publication
- Experience writing and commissioning original journalism, managing staff writers, and working with outside contributors
- A track record of writing and editing impactful stories on topics that include Canadian politics, business, global affairs, culture, health, lifestyle, and social issues
- Wide-ranging intellectual interests from Canadian history and political science to foreign policy, economics, and beyond
- An ability to develop compelling narratives and embrace nuance without losing clarity
- Excellent news judgment and a knack for distinctive angles and sharp analysis
- A strong understanding of Canada's media landscape, political institutions, and the issues shaping the country
- A commitment to a diversity of perspectives
- Unimpeachable news judgment and editorial instincts
- Enthusiastic about innovation, positive change and collaboration
- Experience producing editorial content for social media platforms, with an understanding of digital audiences and platform-specific storytelling
