About the roleShae Beauty Co Inc is an AI-powered beauty personalization platform that matches consumers to skincare and beauty products based on their unique skin profile. We combine a consumer-facing scan app with a brand-side Shopify plugin, and our technology sits at the intersection of computer vision, ingredient science, and AI-driven personalization.
We are looking for a Research Analyst to support our core R&D; program. This role sits at the heart of our SR&ED-eligible; activities: you will conduct systematic investigations into skin scanning technology and ingredient science, contribute to resolving key technological uncertainties in our AI personalization engine, and maintain the experimental documentation that underpins our research. Your work will feed directly into product development and technology decisions.
What you'll work onSkin scanning and imaging research Conduct systematic investigation into skin scanning and imaging technologies for integration into our next product phase. This includes reviewing smartphone-based and clinical-grade hardware options, evaluating existing datasets, and analyzing peer-reviewed literature on skin tone mapping, condition detection, and computer vision applied to dermatological analysis. Document findings in structured technical briefs that identify technological uncertainties and feasibility constraints for the engineering team.
Ingredient ontology and compatibility research Support experimental development of our canonical ingredient ontology. Research multi-ingredient interactions, identify gaps in compatibility and contraindication data, and conduct hypothesis-driven analysis to resolve scientific uncertainty in our scoring models. Review regulatory frameworks across Canadian, US,
and EU markets to assess data applicability. All outputs form part of the SR&ED; experimental record.
Brand and product dataset evaluation Evaluate brand product datasets for quality, completeness, and compatibility with our ingredient normalization pipeline. Assess data structures from potential integration partners against our ontology requirements, identify ingestion challenges, and document findings to inform the technical team. This is a data research and technical assessment function.
Experimental documentation and research records Maintain rigorous and auditable records of all research activities, including hypotheses tested, methodologies used, results observed, and conclusions drawn. Support the preparation of SR&ED; technical documentation. Help define and refine research protocols and templates as the program scales.
Technology landscape monitoring Track developments in AI-driven skin analysis, computer vision for dermatology, and beauty tech personalization. Synthesize findings into concise monthly briefs for the leadership and technical teams, with a focus on identifying emerging methods relevant to our R&D; workstreams.
Who we're looking for
- 2 to 4 years in a research, scientific analysis, or technical investigation role — academic research, R&D;, or applied science backgrounds are all welcome
- Strong ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear, structured outputs (briefs, summaries, landscape maps)
- Comfortable applying both qualitative and quantitative research methods; understands the difference between hypothesis testing and general information gathering
- Genuine interest in beauty, skincare, or health tech; you follow the space and have opinions about it
- Organized and self-directed; you can manage multiple research threads without close supervision
- Strong written communication; able to document experimental observations and findings in a clear, structured, and auditable way
- Familiarity with tools like Notion, Airtable, or similar for organizing research output
- Based in Toronto or available to work fully remote in Eastern Time hours
Nice to have
- Background or coursework in cosmetic science, chemistry, biology, or dermatology
- Experience with competitive intelligence or brand research in consumer products or health tech
- Exposure to AI/ML product development or data annotation workflows
- Experience in an early-stage startup or fast-moving product team
- Familiarity with ingredient databases (INCIDecoder, CosDNA, EWG Skin Deep, or similar)
What we offer
- A front-row seat at an AI beauty tech startup with real traction (7 active LOIs, University of Waterloo co-op partnership, 10,000 lab scans of training data)
- Direct access to leadership and a chance to shape how research gets done, not just execute it
- Work that spans product, commercial, and technology decisions
- Flexible working setting; Toronto-based or fully remote
- Compensation: CAD $2,300 - $2,700 per month, commensurate with experience
