Founded in 1996, BGES is a Calgary-based technical services company specializing in in-situ reservoir testing, subsurface containment evaluation, geomechanics, and field and laboratory diagnostics. Our multidisciplinary team applies science, engineering, instrumentation, and practical technology to solve complex challenges in SAGD, CCUS, energy storage, and unconventional resources.

Position Summary

BGES is seeking a Software & IT Specialist to develop internal software, AI applications, data-processing tools, and automation systems while supporting the company’s day-to-day IT environment. The role combines programming with practical exposure to engineering, laboratory testing, instrumentation, equipment control, and field operations.

The successful candidate will primarily work on software, AI, automation, databases, and IT support. During busy laboratory periods, the individual may occasionally assist with equipment setup, sample or equipment loading, testing activities, and custom programming for automated testing and data acquisition.

Key Responsibilities

Software, AI & Automation

- Design, develop, test, and maintain internal software applications and technical tools.
- Develop custom software for data acquisition, processing, analysis, visualization, and reporting.
- Develop and implement AI and machine-learning applications for technical analysis, automation, data interpretation, and internal workflows.
- Explore practical applications of generative AI, large language models, and other emerging AI technologies.
- Develop customized programs to automate engineering, laboratory, and business processes.
- Develop and maintain databases for laboratory, field, engineering, and operational data.
- Integrate software with databases, APIs, instrumentation, equipment, and third-party applications.
- Modify and improve existing software as operational requirements evolve.
- Maintain organized source code, version control, and technical documentation.

IT Systems Administration & Support

- Provide day-to-day administration and support for company IT systems.
- Set up, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot desktop and laptop computers, software, printers,



and other IT equipment.
- Assist with the administration of Microsoft 365, email, user accounts, permissions, file sharing, and cloud applications.
- Support wired and wireless networks and network-connected equipment.
- Troubleshoot computer, software, network, connectivity, and user-access issues.
- Assist with data storage, backups, cybersecurity, software updates, and endpoint protection.
- Set up computers, accounts, software, and system access for new employees.
- Maintain basic documentation and inventory of computers, software, licences, and IT equipment.
- Coordinate with external IT service providers when specialized support is required.
- Assist in evaluating and implementing new IT hardware, software, and systems.

Laboratory & Technical Support

Laboratory support will be a minor, as-needed component of the position, primarily during periods of high laboratory workload.

- Assist laboratory personnel with loading and unloading samples and testing equipment, equipment setup, and general hands-on activities.
- Assist with the operation and monitoring of laboratory testing equipment under the direction of technical personnel.
- Provide general assistance with laboratory testing when additional personnel are required.
- Develop or modify custom programs for laboratory testing equipment.
- Develop and improve automated testing programs, data-acquisition routines, equipment controls, and related software.
- Assist with integrating sensors, instrumentation, controllers, and testing equipment with computer-based systems.

Qualifications

- Diploma or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- Strong programming skills, preferably including Python and Java,



with experience in other programming languages are considered an asset.
- Experience with databases, APIs, data processing, and software integration.
- Knowledge or experience with AI, machine learning, or AI-assisted software development.
- Positive understanding of computer hardware, Windows, TCP/IP networking, Wi-Fi, network storage, backups, and general IT.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working with computers, technical equipment, instrumentation, and hardware.
- Ability to work independently, collaborate with technical teams, and occasionally assist with hands-on laboratory work.

Preferred Assets

- Python-based AI development, RAG, AI agents, SQL, web applications, or technical dashboards.
- Microsoft 365 administration, cybersecurity, network administration, data storage, and backup systems.
- Engineering or scientific software, data-acquisition systems, LabVIEW, PLCs, industrial controls, Modbus, serial communications, TCP/IP, OPC, sensor integration, embedded systems, or computer-controlled equipment.

- Hands-on, curious, organized, and motivated to solve practical technical problems.
- Comfortable working across software, AI, computers, networks, hardware, data, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Able to learn new technologies quickly, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel.
- Enjoys working in a smaller technical organization where responsibilities may extend beyond a narrowly defined role.
