Google is hiring a Staff Software Developer focused on Client Stack, Front End and Web Development for Google Cloud , based in Waterloo, Ontario . This is a senior, high-impact engineering leadership role at the centre of one of the most ambitious cloud and productivity initiatives in the industry — driving the technical strategy for Chat Client Side Encryption (CSE) within Google's suite of tools used by billions of people worldwide. This role sits at the intersection of architectural decision-making , hands-on full-stack development , and team leadership .

You'll be working alongside teams building the future of Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Sheets, Vids, and Meet , with direct exposure to Google DeepMind model builders and opportunities to shape productivity tools five to ten years into the future.

About the Role: Staff Software Developer, Client Stack As the technical lead on the Chat Client Side Encryption initiative , you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of a secure, robust CSE solution — from architectural design through to delivery. You'll provide strategic direction and hands-on guidance to a distributed team of developers, navigating complex technical challenges and making key decisions that affect the product at scale. This position demands a developer who can operate across back-end systems (Java and similar), front-end technologies (JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS), and mobile stacks , all while maintaining clarity across cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

Technical leadership , the ability to influence without authority, and a passion for large-scale cloud solutions are central to succeeding in this role. The salary range in Canada is $216,000 – $221,000 CAD per year , plus a 20% bonus target , equity , and a comprehensive advantages package .
