Sarnia

CMS is hiring across our full turnaround and maintenance project controls practice. Whether you have a few years under your belt or you have run the controls function on a major TA, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for experienced people at every level — Planner, Scheduler, Intermediate Specialist, and Senior Specialist — to support an expanding portfolio of turnaround, shutdown, and maintenance projects across southwestern Ontario and beyond.

Who We Are Looking For

We are hiring across four roles. You only need to fit one. Please specify which one you are applying for by answering the appropriate prescreening question.

TA Planner

You have come up through the trades or spent enough time in the field that you can read a P&ID;, walk a unit, and know what you are looking at. You have developed job plans, not just filled in a template, but actually thought through the sequence, identified the materials, confirmed the isolation points, and handed a package to a field supervisor that they could execute from without calling you twice.

Specific experience we are looking for:

- Job plan development for mechanical, piping, or instrumentation scope in an industrial environment
- P&ID; walk-downs and field scope validation
- Material readiness tracking and escalation before TA start

TA Scheduler You build TA schedules in Primavera P6 and you know the difference between a schedule that looks right and one that is right. You have found dangling activities in someone else’s schedule and fixed them before they became a problem.

During execution you are at the daily meeting with a current look-ahead, not one from yesterday.

Specific experience we are looking for:

- TA or shutdown schedule build in Primavera P6
- Shift calendar setup and duration calculations from job plan hours and crew size
- Daily schedule updates and 24/48-hour look-ahead production during execution
- Critical path analysis and near-critical path monitoring

Intermediate Project Controls Specialist You have 2–5 years of project controls experience and you can carry your own weight on a client engagement. You produce cost reports that are accurate and on time. You know what an EAC is, how to calculate it, and how to explain it to a project manager who needs to make a decision based on it.

Since you have TA experience, you have produced a daily cost report before the morning coordination meeting, not after it.

Specific experience we are looking for:

- Cost reporting against a defined budget actuals, commitments, EAC, and variances
- Scope change register management and contingency tracking
- Contractor invoice reconciliation against approved work orders
- Budget structure understanding of direct labour, materials, overheads, and contingency as distinct categories
- Microsoft Excel proficiency including pivot tables, SUMIFS, and cost report templates

Senior Project Controls Specialist You have been the controls lead on a turnaround or a significant maintenance event. Not just a contributor, the person the project manager called when the numbers did not make sense and they needed an answer before the next meeting.

You can troubleshoot a forecast overrun on the fly: scope growth versus productivity decline. You have maintained a contingency balance in real time and told a TA Manager when it was running out, clearly, early, and with a recommendation.

On the planning and scheduling side,

you understand enough to have an intelligent conversation with the Planner about why a job plan hour estimate is too low, and with the Scheduler about why a recovery option that looks positive on paper will not work in the field.

Specific experience we are looking for:

- TA or major maintenance cost control lead including daily reporting, EAC management, and close-out
- Real-time scope growth management including register, contingency tracking, and TA Manager communication
- Estimate-to-actual reconciliation with root cause analysis
- Ability to read and critically assess a TA schedule including critical path, productivity trends, and recovery options
- Experience developing intermediate or junior project controls staff
- Client-facing experience including presenting cost and schedule status and defending the numbers

Job Type: Full-time Pay: $85,000.00-$125,000.00 per year

Benefits

- Dental care
- Disability insurance
- Extended health care
- Paid time off
- RRSP match
- Vision care

Ability to commute/relocate:
- Sarnia, ON N7T 7X1: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Application question(s):
- Planner - Tell me about a turnaround or shutdown you planned for. What was the scope, how many work orders were in the final list, and what was your specific role in the planning process?
- Scheduler - Describe the last TA schedule you built in P6. What was the project, how many activities were in the schedule, and how did you handle the isolation sequence?
- Intermediate Project Control - Describe a cost report you produced regularly on a project or TA. What did it contain, how often did you produce it, and who used it to make decisions?
- Senior Project Control Specialist - What is the largest turnaround or maintenance event you have been the controls lead on? What was the total budget, how long was the window, and what did your close-out variance look like?

Work Location: In person
