Vancouver

Pilgrim Church is hiring a part-time Worship Leader/Director for a one-year fixed term to lead congregational worship two Sundays a month and coordinate our worship teams through Planning Center. The role is 20 paid hours a month at $27.85/hour, with additional paid hours for three special services. It covers a season in which one of our worship leaders is on parental leave.

Position at a glance

- Title: Worship Ministry Leader/Director
- Term: One-year fixed-term employment
- Reports to: Lead Pastor
- Sundays led: 2 per month
- Hours: 20 per month, plus additional paid hours for Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
- Rate: $27.85/hour, plus 4% vacation pay
- Location: Pilgrim Church, 6075 Inverness St, Vancouver

Purpose of the role The Worship Leader helps a multigenerational congregation sing its faith together. The task is pastoral before it is musical: the songs carry the congregation into the liturgy that follows, through creed, confession of sin, intercession for the world and community, the Lord's Prayer, the sermon, communion and the blessing.

Term

This is a one-year, fixed-term, part-time employment position. It is created to cover a parental leave and will end at the end date unless the church and the Worship Ministry Leader/Director agree in writing to extend it. Either party may end the employment early with four weeks' written notice, or, at the church's option, pay in lieu of that notice.

The full terms will be set out in a written employment agreement signed before the start date. About two months before the end of the term, the Lead Pastor and the Worship Leader will meet to talk honestly about what comes next, whether that is a handover, an extension, or a different way of continuing to serve.

Core responsibilities

Leading Sunday worship. The Worship Leader leads congregational singing on two Sundays each month, chosen in coordination with the team. They run the Saturday-morning rehearsal, arrive on Sunday for setup and soundcheck,

lead the team through a warm-up and run-through, and lead the congregation in the service.

Planning songs and liturgy. For each Sunday they lead, the Worship Leader chooses songs and prayers in conversation with the Lead Pastor's sermon text and the liturgical season, so that the music flows with the rest of the service. Sermon texts will be shared at least three weeks ahead.

Scheduling and Planning Center. The Worship Leader keeps Planning Center current for the whole worship ministry, not only their own Sundays. This means:

- building and publishing the monthly team schedule in coordination with the other worship leaders;
- confirming availability and finding substitutes when someone cancels;
- posting each set, with keys, charts and arrangements, by the Wednesday before;
- logging songs used so the church has an accurate record and CCLI reporting stays clean;
- noticing volunteers who are serving too often or not often enough.

The schedule is the Worship Leader's responsibility, and they have the authority that goes with it, including saying no to a request. Anything they cannot resolve comes to the Lead Pastor. Encouraging the team. The Worship Leader opens rehearsals with a brief reflection and prayer, gives specific and encouraging feedback, and is patient with volunteers of mixed ability and age, from teenagers to seniors. Where possible, they give a younger or emerging musician the chance to grow in leading.

Special services. The Worship Leader also plans and leads music for Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

These are paid as additional hours at the same rate, on top of the 20 monthly hours.

Monthly hours The 20 monthly hours are allotted as follows:

- Song and prayer selection, planning: 1 hr per Sunday led (2 hrs/month)
- Rehearsal: 2 hrs per Sunday led (4 hrs/month)
- Sunday setup, soundcheck, run-through and service: 3 hrs per Sunday led (6 hrs/month)
- Team scheduling, substitutes, Planning Center: 3 hrs/month
- Learning songs, editing charts, team care, check-ins with the Lead Pastor: 5 hrs/month

Qualities and qualifications The right person is a mature follower of Jesus who loves congregational singing more than performance, and who can lead peers warmly without needing to be the most skilled musician on stage.

- Agreement with Pilgrim's statement of faith and willingness to take part in the life of the congregation during the term.
- Competence leading from voice and at least one instrument (keys or guitar), with the ability to read chord charts and lead a band.
- Comfort with Planning Center, or willingness to learn it quickly.
- Reliability with deadlines, schedules and communication.
- Theological discernment about lyrics, and teachability in receiving feedback.
- Completion of Pilgrim's protected church screening, including a police vulnerable sector check, since teams may include minors.

How to apply Send a short cover letter, a résumé or summary of your music and ministry experience, a recording of a service you've led if available, and the names of two references (one a pastor) to [email protected].

Selected applicants will be invited for a coffee, followed by a paid Sunday leading worship with our team, with planning, rehearsal and the service all paid at the role's rate. A final conversation with the hiring committee follows.

Pay: $27.85 per hour

Expected hours: 5.0 per week
