The road to recovery isn’t always linear. Be part of care that strives to meet people where they are at every step of the way.

Road to Recovery (R2R) is now accepting applications for nurses to join their team on Acute Detox units at St. Paul's Hospital. Here, nurses provide specialized, relationship-centred substance use care as part of an interdisciplinary team to people looking to shift their relationship with their substance use.

What is R2R?

The R2R initiative strives to better address treatment of substance use issues by providing the right support to each client at the right time. People who use substances deserve the same access to evidence-based care as anyone else, free from stigma. As with all of our services at PHC, R2R delivers care in a way that strives to be person-centred, trauma-informed and culturally safe. Launched in 2023, the R2R supports clients at every phase of their wellness and recovery journey by coordinating seamless care, even if there are setbacks or relapses along the way.

The R2R continuum of services in operation today includes 25 detox beds located at St. Paul's Hospital, 20 transitional care beds for clients awaiting space in a treatment program or long-term housing, and the Aftercare Team, which launched in Fall 2024, providing outreach aftercare in the community. The initiative is rolling out in steps, with additional treatment services to come soon,

including a 50 bed off-site treatment center.

Your responsibilities will include

- Provide specialized acute detox nursing care Assess and monitor patients throughout withdrawal, develop and implement individualized care plans, provide nursing interventions, and respond to changes in condition or acute and life-threatening situations.
- Support stabilization and recovery Use clinical judgment and evidence-based practice to manage changing patient needs, provide health education and coaching, and help patients build knowledge and strategies that support their health and substance use goals.
- Advocate and coordinate care Build therapeutic relationships grounded in dignity and respect, advocate for patient needs and preferences, facilitate discharge planning, and connect patients with appropriate community and health resources.
- Collaborate and strengthen practice Work closely with nurses and the interdisciplinary team, share clinical knowledge, support students and new staff, and contribute to quality improvement, education, research and the ongoing development of R2R services.

Minimum Nurse-to-Patient Ratios (mNPR) set the minimum number of nurses required to safely care for patients on a given unit. Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses' Union (BCNU), and health organizations across British Columbia,

mNPR provides a consistent and transparent approach to staffing that supports protected nursing practice and high-quality patient care. At Providence Health Care (PHC), our approach to implementing mNPR reflects our commitment to person-centred, socially just, compassionate care and our dedication to Indigenous cultural safety. Guided by our mission and values – Spirituality, Integrity, Stewardship, Trust, Excellence, and Respect – PHC is working collaboratively across all departments to ensure mNPR is thoughtfully adapted to the unique needs of each clinical program and specialty area.
