Apex Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heating Ltd. is hiring service technicians at every level of experience, from people who have never opened a condensing unit to Red Seal refrigeration mechanics. We hire for the person first and the ticket second. We value safety and support the personal ownership of safety in every individual that we work with. We keep cold things cold and warm things warm for a variety of different commercial and industrial sites. The equipment ranges from refrigeration racks and walk-ins to chillers, rooftop units, VRF systems, make-up air units, boilers, ice machines, control systems, fuel gas systems, electrical systems, ducting and ventilation systems, and food-service equipment. When our phone rings, something a business depends on has stopped working. We pride ourselves on a comprehensive and efficient response, with competence and positive energy.
•
Location:
Calgary, AB and surrounding area.
• Type: full-time, permanent.
• Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour workday. The position includes an on-call rotation obligation.
• Pay: Journeyperson Refrigeration rate of $53.00/hour. Apprentice rates are set by period. Rates are negotiable for individuals indentured or certified in another trade.
• Reports to: Service Manager This Posting is for More Than Refrigeration Mechanics: Most refrigeration mechanic postings ask for a ticket and five years of experience. This one does not. We are Service Technicians
- the attributes that make a positive service technician are the intention to do what is right and what is helpful in the moment, the intention of efficiently assessing root causes as well as the final failure, the intention to work with confidence and in a measured approach, and the intention of understanding how to effectively communicate with a client. These attributes don't belong to any one trade. These skills exist in all, and not all environments support the development of them. Whatever job you are currently doing may be just around the corner of the work that we are performing daily with a strong sense of accomplishment. And so, we're hiring on three tracks:
• New to the trade: You're a tradesperson, technician or capable fixer with no refrigeration background.
• Ticketed in another trade: You're a journeyperson electrician, plumber, gasfitter, sheet metal worker, steamfitter or similar who wants to cross into refrigeration and air conditioning.
• Refrigeration mechanic: You're an apprentice or journeyperson in the trade already. You know what this work is, and we'd like to talk.
Who Thrives Here? Service work is different from installation or shop work. You're on the road on your own most of the day, in and out of various spaces, the customer may be standing next to you, and the current known problem is not in the manual. The people who do well here share a few traits:
• You're kind, open-minded, and interested in helping others. The customer might be a store manager or chef with a failing walk-in at 5 p.m. on a Friday. You give them a straight answer, plainly and without drama, and you treat them well while you do it. Service with a smile isn't a slogan here; it is the job.
• You want to work first and learn while doing it. We are after positive-charged, motivated people who enjoying learning and self-improvement by getting their hands on the equipment.
• You like finding out why. A compressor that won't start could be electrical, mechanical, a control, or a part someone else installed last month. You enjoy being measured and exact.
• You can be trusted to positively represent the team while working alone or with your peers. You are open to failure and learning from that experience. Nobody is watching you at a customer's site: integrity is paramount. Your actions need to match your words, and that should feel natural. Back at the shop, you share what you’ve learned and value collaboration and personal growth.
• You own the scope from start to finish. The call isn't finished when the unit runs. It's done when the service report is right, the parts are recorded and the customer knows what happened and can have trust in your repair.
• You enjoy being steady, not reckless. Working at heights, electrical systems up to 600 volts, flammable refrigerants, pressurized systems, and driving in heavy metropolitan traffic are all in the
job description
. You follow the procedure every time, including when no one is observing.
• You are not overwhelmed by physical tasks. Ladders, cramped mechanical rooms, and heavy parts are part of our world every day. This is also an industry that is heavily driven by environmental conditions. You can expect to be the busiest on the hottest and the coldest days of the year,
and you will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions. People who do not find joy in opportunities from experience will not be successful here, and we do not want to work with people who are not driven to be successful. If the rest describes you better than any ticket or certification does, apply We love our work and enjoy doing it as part of a team. What You Need: Two firm
requirements:
a clear police information check and an Alberta driver’s license. Beyond that, we hire for the traits above, not a checklist. Tickets and certifications help but are not required if you possess an intention to achieve positive outcomes. We will help you get the ones the scopes need:
• Journeyperson certification in refrigeration and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, gasfitting, sheet metal or pipefitting/steamfitting.
• An Alberta Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprenticeship in progress.
• Refrigerant handling (ozone depletion prevention) certification.
• Existing safety certifications (fall protection, standard first aid, etc.)
• Previous experience with refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, or other building systems. What Apex Offers:
• Pay that matches where you start: Our journeyperson refrigeration rate is $53.00 per hour. Apprentices are paid as a percentage of the journeyperson rate and move up each period. Rates are negotiable for individuals indentured or certified in another trade.
• Training and support: access to a wide variety of equipment and training opportunities, and support from some of the most knowledgeable and competent personnel in the industry.
• Apprenticeship: We indenture apprentices in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic trade, a Red Seal trade, after successful completion of the 90-day probationary period.
•
Benefits:
Group health and dental coverage after the 90-day probationary period.
• Variety: restaurants, commercial buildings, industrial processes; refrigeration, HVAC, hydronics, gas and controls, the sky is the limit.
• Management that doesn’t lose touch: The Service Manager you report to works with you and runs calls too. Candidates will be contacted via email, please make sure you include an up-to-date email address with your resume. We thank everyone for their interest in employment with our company. Not all candidates will proceed to the interview stage, however we will keep you informed on the status of your application as you move through our hiring process.
