Job Description
The FinTech research group at Haskayne studies how new financial technologies such as artificial intelligence, neurofinance, or blockchain and decentralized finance, are reshaping markets and investor behavior. The group hosts the annual Finance in the Digital Age (FiDA) conference, which brings together academics, regulators, and industry in Calgary. Its faculty hold working relationships with national and global regulators such as the Bank of Canada, the Alberta Securities Commission, the Bank for International Settlements, or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The Post-Doctoral Scholar will play a central role in the FinTech group¿s engagement agenda with the financial industry and regulators. The Scholar will report to Professor Marius Zoican and work closely with all FinTech faculty in the Finance Area. Responsibilities fall into four areas:
• Industry and regulatory liaison. Serve as the group¿s operational point of contact with partner institutions. They will focus on building and maintaining relationships, identifying research questions of shared interest, and coordinating letters of support and in-kind commitments.
• Research translation. Translate FinTech research produced at Haskayne for policy and practitioner audiences through policy briefs, white papers, and presentations for regulators and industry partners, supporting the group¿s external communications and web presence.
• Grant development. Lead the logistics of large collaborative grant proposals, including drafting partnership-development materials, preparing budgets and timelines, and assembling the documented record of engagement that such applications require.
• Event organization. Supports the organization of the group¿s engagement events, including but not limited to: the annual FiDA conference (in collaboration with the Research Events Coordinator), and a recurring lunch-and-lecture series with Calgary¿s financial technology industry. The Scholar is also expected to maintain an active research agenda in financial technology or digital finance, independently and in collaboration with Haskayne faculty, with full access to the group¿s data infrastructure, laboratories, seminar series, and network of policy partners.
Qualifications:
A PhD in finance, economics, or a related discipline (for example, information systems, computer science, or public policy with a focus on financial markets), completed by or shortly after the start date.
• A demonstrated track record of engagement with the financial technology industry and/or financial regulators, for example through industry, central bank, or regulatory experience; policy work; consulting; applied research collaborations; or practitioner-oriented publications.
• Strong research potential in financial technology or digital finance, evidenced by working papers, or publications.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present research findings to non-academic audiences.
• Strong organizational and project-management skills. Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder projects or organizing academic, policy, or industry events is an asset.
• Familiarity with one or more of the following: blockchain and decentralized finance, artificial intelligence in financial markets, digital trading platforms and investor behavior, or financial market regulation. Application Details: Interested individuals are encouraged to apply online via the link. Please note that the system only allows up to four attachments. Your four application attachments should be organized to include: (1) a cover letter describing the applicant¿s engagement with the financial technology industry and regulators, research interests, and fit with the role; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) one representative research paper (for example, the job market paper); and (4) the names and contact information of three references. The salary is $60,000 CAD per annum, plus University of Calgary Plan C health benefits. The terms and conditions of employment are covered under the UCalgary and PDAC Collective Agreement.
