As an Automation Engineer, you will build and maintain a reliable, automated regression test suite using Playwright and Node.js, with test management and reporting through Azure DevOps. You will review, organize, and bring existing manual regression tests into Azure DevOps Test Plans, prioritizing high-value candidates for automation. You will leverage AI-assisted tools such as GitHub Copilot, Playwright CodeGen, and Playwright MCP to accelerate test development, applying engineering judgment to refine generated tests and ensure their quality. This is a remote, contractual role based anywhere in Canada for a period of 6 months with the potential for extension What you will do:
-
• Design, develop, and maintain automated browser-based regression tests using Playwright and JavaScript/TypeScript on Node.js.
• Establish and maintain the regression test inventory in Azure DevOps Test Plans, including test cases, suites, and appropriate traceability.
• Identify high-value automation candidates based on repeatability, business criticality, and potential to reduce regression execution time.
• Develop automated Playwright tests using AI-assisted tools, including GitHub Copilot, Playwright CodeGen, and Playwright MCP, then refine the generated output into reliable, maintainable automation.
• Establish automated execution and reporting, including publishing results to Azure DevOps and maintaining traceability to the corresponding test cases.
• Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and keep them stable, fast and low in flakiness.
• Investigate failures, log defects with clear reproduction steps, and work with developers and QA to resolve them.
• Evaluate and, where useful, adopt an Azure DevOps MCP Server to connect AI tooling to test plans and work items.
• Document frameworks, conventions and runbooks so the team can maintain the suite after the contract ends. What do you need to succeed:
-
• 7+ years of hands-on test automation experience as an individual contributor.
• Robust Playwright experience with JavaScript/TypeScript on Node.js.
• Experience building maintainable test automation using reusable components, fixtures, locators, assertions, and appropriate test design patterns.
• Familiarity with Azure DevOps Test Plans, including test cases, test suites, test runs, and results management.
• Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, preferably Azure DevOps Pipelines.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot in day-to-day test development.
• Experience reviewing and translating existing manual test documentation into structured test cases and executable automation.
• Ability to assess regression test coverage, identify duplication and gaps, and prioritize automation based on business value and execution effort.
• Solid grasp of software testing practices: regression, smoke and end-to-end strategy, and defect triage.
• Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work with little supervision. Nice to have
• Experience with Playwright CodeGen and Playwright MCP for AI-assisted test creation.
• Hands-on experience with an Azure DevOps MCP Server, or the interest to evaluate one.
• Experience connecting Playwright results to Azure DevOps Test Plans, including tools such as playwright-azure-reporter.
• Experience establishing or expanding a test automation framework within a short-term engagement Join a team that offers a competitive hourly rate, a relaxed, casual workspace, and great people to collaborate with every day. If you meet the criteria above and this role sounds like your next big move, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today and help us build smarter, faster automation.
