Reports to: Senior Manager, Platform Engineering
About This Role
Rates.ca operates a modern, regulated, multi‑platform engineering ecosystem spanning cloud, edge, CI/CD, observability, and data platforms. As the platform surface grows, we’re looking for strong Platform Engineers who can:
- Build and evolve paved roads for software engineers
- Operate confidently across cloud and edge architectures
- Reduce friction, risk, and toil across delivery teams
- Partner closely with Security, Operations, and Software Engineering
What You’ll Work On (Platform Scope)
You’ll contribute to and operate across the core platforms currently used at Rates.ca, including:
- AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, IAM, networking, managed services)
- Hybrid workloads spanning serverless and VM-based systems
- Regional and environment‑aware deployment patterns
Edge & Traffic Platforms
- Cloudflare as a first‑class platform, including:
- CDN and edge routing
- Cloudflare Workers for edge APIs and request transformation
- DNS, SSL/TLS, and traffic management
- WAF, bot management, rate limiting, and DDoS protection
- Integration between Cloudflare edge and AWS
CI/CD & Infrastructure as Code
- GitLab CI/CD pipelines
- Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and change control
- Environment consistency across production and non‑production
Observability & Operations
- Platform‑level alerting and signal hygiene
- Incident prevention in partnership with Engineering Operations
Data & Persistence (in partnership with data specialists)
- Relational databases (e.g., MariaDB or managed RDS‑style platforms)
- Event‑driven and data‑pipeline integrations (where applicable)
- Secure data access patterns and operational guardrails
Core Responsibilities
- Build and maintain standardized platform components used by product teams
- Improve developer experience through self‑service tooling and automation
- Reduce bespoke infrastructure patterns and undocumented tribal knowledge
- Treat internal platforms as products, with consumers and feedback loops
- Implement and evolve Cloudflare and AWS patterns for performance, reliability, and security
- Support edge use cases such as API proxying, validation, and transformation
- Ensure consistent routing, TLS, and traffic controls across environments
- Participate in Cloudflare operational readiness and incident response workflows
Reliability & Security by Default
- Embed security and compliance guardrails into platform primitives
- Partner with Security Engineering on:
- Firewall rules
- Edge security analytics
- Reduce platform‑caused incidents through automation and standardization
- Contribute to post‑incident remediation and systemic fixes
AI‑Augmented Platform Work
- Use approved AI‑assisted tooling to:
- Analyze logs and metrics
- Accelerate root‑cause analysis
- Ensure AI is used responsibly, with human review and auditability
What Success Looks Like
- Software Engineers adopt standard platform paths by default
- Faster environment provisioning with fewer manual steps
- Reduced edge‑ and platform‑related incidents
- Clear, observable behavior across cloud and edge layers
- Platforms that scale without increasing cognitive load
What You Bring
- Strong experience as a Platform, Cloud, or Infrastructure Engineer
- Hands‑on experience with AWS cloud services
- Hands‑on experience managing Cloudflare (CDN, Workers, DNS, WAF, TLS)
- Experience with Terraform and modern CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or equivalent)
- Comfort working across networking, security, and application boundaries
- Strong troubleshooting and systems‑thinking skills
- Experience with edge and cloud architectures (Cloudflare + AWS)
- Observability tooling experience (e.g., Datadog)
- Experience operating in regulated or high‑availability environments
- Familiarity with AI‑assisted diagnostics or platform analytics
