Reporter/Editor (Weekends) – Montreal

Part-Time

We are looking for a energetic and self-motivated individual to edit copy four days a week, including on weekend afternoons and evenings. Reporting to the Managing Editor and working closely with the Weekend Editor and National Editor, the successful candidate will work Thursdays and Fridays to edit, publish and schedule wire copy from across the country. They will also take charge of the news desk on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings, when they will juggle a variety of tasks including editing and ensuring that any breaking news is covered.

General Responsibilities:

- The successful applicant will be available to bureaus and departments across the country on Thursdays and Fridays to edit, package and publish copy to the wire as needed, taking direction from supervisors across the company
- They should keenly understand the importance of packaging, ensuring video and photos are attached to stories
- They will assist the Weekend Editor in editing, packaging and publishing copy on Saturdays and Sundays as needed, as well as any other requests from the Weekend Editor, which could include writing assignments and ensuring photo and video assets are ready and attach to stories
- After the Weekend Editor signs off on Saturdays and Sundays, the successful applicant will take charge of the desk and ensure CP is on top of any breaking news or spot events across the country; that includes monitoring email inboxes across the country, other news outlets and key social media accounts for potential news
- They will also oversee transition to the overnight desk to ensure that any lingering or upcoming coverage needs are addressed that night and/or morning

The successful candidate will:





- Have strong decision-making skills and excellent news judgment as well as a good handle on the types of stories our clients want on the weekends.
- Have confidence to make decisions on their own, while knowing when to ask for help.
- Demonstrate an eagerness to take the reins whenever major news breaks.
- Be a meticulous editor who is able to operate under tight deadline pressure.
- Have good organizational skills, particularly when it comes to looking ahead at events that need extra planning to achieve the right goals for our coverage.
- Have impeccable knowledge of CP Style and a strong ethical and legal compass.
- Have the ability to handle a number of competing demands on deadline.
- Have professional experience with different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia.

Hiring Range:

The hourly rate for this role ranges from $30.42 to $40.31. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills and alignment with the role requirements.

Nous sommes à la recherche d’une personne dynamique et motivée pour réviser la copie quatre jours par semaine, incluant les après-midis et les soirées du week-end. Relevant de la direction de l’information et travaillant de concert avec le responsable du week-end et la direction de la rédaction nationale, la personne choisie travaillera le jeudi et le vendredi pour réviser, publier et planifier la diffusion de la copie en provenance de partout au pays. Elle se chargera également du pupitre en après-midi et en soirée le samedi et le dimanche, tout en s’acquittant de différentes tâches, soit réviser la copie et s’assurer de la couverture de toutes les nouvelles de dernière heure.

Responsabilités générales :

- La personne choisie sera disponible auprès des bureaux et services à travers le pays le jeudi et le vendredi pour la révision, la présentation et la publication de la copie selon les besoins, en suivant les instructions des superviseurs à travers le pays.
- Elle devra bien comprendre l’importance de la présentation, en s’assurant que vidéo et photos sont reliées aux reportages.
