About Rivian
Rivianis on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
Commercial Technology builds the systems behind how customers buy, finance, and take delivery of their Rivian. Our team owns the backend services that calculate taxes and fees, manage title and registration, power finance and lease pricing, and connect Rivian with external partners like DMV service providers, lenders, and our ERP. Our work directly affects every vehicle delivery, including the launch of R2. We’re looking for a Software Engineer II to join our backend team and help build and scale the services that make sure every customer is charged correctly and every vehicle is titled and registered correctly. You'll work across state-specific tax and fee rules, third‑party integrations, and order management workflows, and partner closely with Title & Registration Operations, Tax, Finance, and Program Management. This role fits someone who enjoys going deep in a complex domain, values accuracy, and wants to build systems that scale as we expand to new states, dealers, and vehicle programs.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for tax and fee calculation, title and registration, and DMV status tracking
- Integrate with third‑party partners (e.g., tax/registration vendors, SAP)
and help drive issues to resolution with external teams
- Implement and maintain state‑and jurisdiction‑specific rules, and help move them toward configurable, maintainable systems
- Support new dealer and location launches, vehicle programs (e.g., R2), and state expansions
- Work with Order Management, Finance, and Shop engineering teams to deliver end‑to‑end features
- Take part in on‑call rotations, triage production issues, and support operational partners
- Write clean, well‑tested code and contribute to code reviews, documentation, and team best practices
- Use AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude) to speed up delivery and support work
Qualifications
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience, mainly on backend systems
- Strong proficiency in Java (Spring Boot or similar)
- Experience building and consuming REST APIs and integrating with third‑party services
- Familiarity with relational databases and event‑driven or messaging systems (e.g., Kafka)
- High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership for correctness
- Clear communication skills and comfort working with non‑engineering stakeholders
- Ability to spot patterns in repeated work and propose cleaner, more scalable solutions
Nice to Have
- Experience in automotive, e‑commerce, fintech,
or other regulated domains
- Knowledge of sales tax, vehicle registration, or financial calculations
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS), Kubernetes, or GitOps tools like ArgoCD
- Exposure to ERP systems such as SAP
