Site Coordinator – Excavation & Earthworks
North Terra Construction | Greater Toronto Area, ON | Full-time
$50,000 – $60,000 per year
About Us
North Terra Construction is a Toronto-based excavation and civil contractor. We do bulk excavation, earthworks, site servicing and civil work for general contractors on commercial, industrial, institutional and community projects across the GTA and Ontario.
The Role
This is an entry-level job for someone who wants to build a career in construction. You'll work in the field. You'll track what our crews produce and what it costs, help foremen understand the drawings, check grades, and make sure extra work gets documented and paid for. You'll learn the business from the ground up, and there's a clear path to Assistant Project Manager, Estimator or Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities
Cost & Production Tracking
- Track daily costs by job, including labour hours, equipment hours, trucking, materials and subcontractors
- Track gravel and aggregate imports: tickets, tonnage and loads received against quantities in the budget and contract
- Track soil export and disposal tickets and reconcile them with trucking invoices
- Record daily production rates (m³ excavated, metres of pipe laid, tonnes placed, etc.) and compare them to the estimate
- Flag cost overruns, low production and quantity discrepancies to the Project Manager early
Scope of Work: Contract vs. Extra Work
- Learn each project's contract scope and help crews and foremen tell base contract work apart from extra work
- Document extra work as it happens with T&M; sheets, photos, quantities and sign-offs from the GC or owner's rep
- Help prepare change order backup,
extra work tickets and progress billing quantities
- Keep a log of change orders, RFIs and site instructions
Blueprints, Layout & Grade
- Read site plans, grading plans, servicing drawings and profiles, and explain them clearly to crews and operators
- Check grades with a laser, rod and level, GPS rover, or grade stakes, and confirm elevations against the drawings
- Coordinate with surveyors on layout and stakeout requests
- Help with as-built mark-ups and quantity takeoffs from drawings
Site Coordination
- Take part in daily crew planning, material and trucking bookings, and equipment moves
- Coordinate deliveries, testing (compaction, geotechnical) and inspections
- Take site photos and keep a daily site diary: weather, crews, equipment, deliveries, delays and visitors
- Attend site meetings with GCs and take notes
Health & Safety
- Support the foreman with toolbox talks, daily hazard assessments and site inspections
- Help keep safety documents, training records and WSIB/OHSA paperwork up to date
- Follow and promote safe work practices around trenches, excavations and heavy equipment
Clerical & Administration
- Enter timesheets, equipment logs and field tickets
- Match delivery tickets to purchase orders and invoices
- File and organize drawings, submittals, permits and project documents
- Prepare easy reports in Excel and email updates for the PM and office
- Handle general office and site admin as needed
What You'll Learn
- How excavation and civil projects are estimated, built and billed
- Contract scope, change management and cost control
- Grade checking, layout and GPS machine control basics
- Working with GCs, consultants, suppliers and inspectors
- A path to Assistant PM, Estimator or Site Superintendent roles
