About Sempass
Sempass is a marketplace built specifically for exchange students. Every year, millions of exchange students move to a new city for about four months. They spend a lot on dorm essentials like bedding, kitchenware, lamps and winter gear, only to throw most of it away four months later. Sempass closes that gap by connecting departing exchange students with incoming ones, so good items get a second semester instead of a trip to the landfill. In Vancouver, we've already helped exchange students save CAD 200 and keep 45 kg (100 lb) of items out of the landfill. We're now growing here and expanding to Toronto and Montreal, and we need someone to run our Vancouver sessions. This is exactly where you come in.
Responsibilities
- Welcome students at the drop-off points on the UBC and SFU campuses during booked 15-minute slots, and at the Sempass storage unit for pick-ups
- Check each student's booking and identity against the Sempass app
- Check the condition of every item at drop-off, and label it with its Sempass code
- Drive collected items safely from UBC to SFU and on to the Sempass storage unit
- Store items safely and keep the inventory organised so every item can be found quickly
- Hand items over to incoming students at pick-up and confirm each handover in the app
- Flag any issues (damaged items, no-shows, missing items) to the Sempass team the same day
Qualifications
- No prior experience required. We'll give you a clear step-by-step guide before your first session.
- Good time management: you're on time for every session and keep bookings running smoothly
- Comfortable talking to students and explaining clearly how Sempass works and why it's worth using
- Able to lift and carry boxes of up to about 15 kg (tell us if you'd need an accommodation)
- Available on all session dates listed above
- Valid driver's licence and your own car, with insurance that covers using it for this work (we'll check this with you before your first session)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada. International students: your study permit must allow off-campus work (most degree-seeking students at a Canadian institution qualify; exchange students usually need a separate work permit). The hours of this role fit within study-permit work limits.
- Previous logistics, retail or event experience is a plus
Pay and schedule
- Pay: CAD 18.25 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay. Driving time is paid.
- Commission: 5% of the value of all items sold in your city, paid with your final pay at the end of January
- Mileage: CAD 0.73 per km driven for Sempass, on top of your hourly pay
- Drop-off sessions: Dec 19, 20 and 21: 1h30 at UBC, about 1 hour of driving, then 1h30 at SFU (times to be confirmed)
- Pick-up sessions: Jan 3, 4 and 5 at the Sempass storage unit, 2 hours each (times to be confirmed)
- Contract: a short, fixed-term employment contract for this cycle
What we offer
- Paid, versatile work that fits into the winter break, with no long-term commitment
- A commission that grows with the number of items sold in your city
- Real start-up experience for your CV: you're the face of Sempass in Vancouver and work directly with the founder
- A reference letter after the cycle
- Priority consideration for future cycles if the role is a good fit for both sides
