About EMCS Industries

EMCS Industries has been protecting vessels from marine growth and corrosion since 1955. From our home base in North Saanich, BC, however, our team serves customers throughout the global marine industry. We’re a small, tight-knit company, which means every person here has the opportunity to make a real impact. We care about outcomes, keep our promises and trust good people to do good work. We work hard, support each other and don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’ve built a workplace where motivated people can succeed without being micromanaged. Now we’re looking for someone who can help us continue building that workplace as we grow.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a positive, practical and independently driven People & Culture Generalist to provide hands-on HR support to our team. This isn’t a role where you wait for someone to hand you a list. You’ll notice when something is missing, figure out what needs to happen and help move it forward. You’ll be comfortable switching between employee questions, recruitment, documentation, manager support and the many small details that make a workplace run well. You’ll bring warmth and good judgment to your work, but you won’t avoid a difficult conversation when one is needed. You know how to be firm without being harsh, kind without being vague and approachable while still maintaining appropriate boundaries. You'll already have the confidence, initiative and judgment to work independently. Support and guidance will be available, but you won’t need someone looking over your shoulder.

What you’ll do

Your responsibilities will evolve with the business, but will likely include:

- Be a trusted and approachable first point of contact for day-to-day employee questions
- Support managers with employee relations, performance conversations and people decisions
- Coordinate recruitment from job posting through interviews, references and offers
- Create a thoughtful and organized onboarding experience for new employees
- Maintain employee records, agreements, policies, templates and other HR documentation
- Coordinate employee changes, leaves, departures and offboarding
- Help managers set clear expectations and follow through on performance commitments
- Support goal setting, check-ins and performance review processes
- Coordinate benefits, payroll changes and other employee information with the appropriate internal and external partners
- Identify gaps or inconsistencies in our people practices and recommend practical solutions
- Build simple, useful processes that work for a growing business
- Help plan employee communications, recognition and team initiatives
- Keep current on relevant BC employment standards and HR practices
- Take on people-related projects as needs and priorities change
- Handle a small amount of general office coordination as part of being part of a small team, such as checking mail, ordering basic office supplies,

keeping shared spaces organized and making sure small day-to-day office needs don't get overlooked. This is a minor part of the role (approximately 5%) and is not intended to be a dedicated office management position.

What we’re looking for

You may be a strong fit if:

- You have 3+ years of progressive HR or People & Culture experience
- You have broad generalist exposure and are comfortable working across several areas of HR
- You’re positive, grounded and genuinely enjoy helping people
- You take initiative and don’t need to be chased for follow-through
- You notice gaps and naturally start thinking about how to fill them
- You’re comfortable making a recommendation, not just presenting a problem
- You communicate clearly and directly, even when the conversation is difficult
- You can balance empathy for an employee with the needs of the business
- You use good judgment and know when to handle something yourself and when to ask for help
- You’re organized, discreet and reliable
- You’re comfortable working in a small company where priorities can change and job descriptions aren’t rigid
- You understand the basics of BC employment standards and workplace practices
- You're comfortable pitching in on the occasional practical, everyday office task. You’re comfortable working in a small company where priorities can change, and sometimes you just need to pitch in and get something done.

A diploma or degree in Human Resources, Business or a related field is helpful. A CPHR designation, or progress toward one, is welcome but not required. Practical judgment, initiative and the way you work with people matter more to us than collecting credentials.

What success looks like

Within your first six months:

- Employees know where to go when they need people support
- Managers receive practical, timely guidance and feel more confident handling people matters
- Recruitment, onboarding and employee documentation are organized and consistent
- Important follow-ups don’t fall through the cracks
- You’ve identified a few meaningful gaps and helped us close them
- You’ve built trust by doing what you say you’ll do

Why join EMCS?

- You’ll have real ownership and the ability to shape how we support our people
- You’ll work with a capable team that values trust, accountability and follow-through
- You’ll have access to senior People & Culture guidance while building your own judgment and confidence
- You’ll be part of a Canadian company doing meaningful work in the global marine industry
- You’ll have a flexible part-time schedule and the opportunity for the role to grow as the business grows
- On-site parking is available

How to apply:

Send the following to [email protected] with "People & Culture HR Generalist – [Your Name]" in the subject line:

- Your resume
- A link to a short Loom video (10 minutes max, unedited) answering questions 1–7
- Written answers to questions 8–11 in the body of your email

Send us a loom answering these questions:

- An employee regularly arrives 20-50 minutes late, or leaves early. They are otherwise good at their job and say, “It’s not a big deal — I always get my work done.” Their manager wants you to deal with it. How would you approach the situation?
- An employee asks for time off that doesn't fit neatly within the company's existing vacation or time-off practices. Walk us through how you would handle the request.
- An employee calls in sick and then is turns into a leave of absence for a personal or family matter. Walk us through what you would do from the moment they pass the 5 day sick leave.
- The company needs a new policy or process, but there isn't one. For example, we need a transparent policy around time off, attendance, remote work or another area where employees have been handling things differently. What do you do?
- Tell us about a time you were given a problem or task and didn't know how to do it. There was no obvious person or process to follow. How did you figure it out? What resources did you use, and how did you know when you had enough information to move forward?
- A manager tells you one thing about an employee, while the employee gives you a very different version of events. Both believe they are right. How would you handle the situation? How would you make sure you aren't simply taking the side of the person you happen to like or agree with?
- This role requires you to build good relationships with employees and managers, but you also need to be willing to tell people things they may not want to hear. Tell us about a time you had to push back on someone, deliver an uncomfortable message or enforce a rule that someone disagreed with. How did you maintain the relationship while still being clear about your position?

What we're looking for in your answers:

We aren't looking for perfect HR terminology or textbook answers. We want to understand how you think, how you gather information, how you handle uncertainty, and how you balance being approachable with maintaining appropriate boundaries. We're particularly interested in how you figure things out when there isn't already a clear process to follow

Written questions (in your email)

- What are your salary expectations?
- When is the earliest you could start?

We know strong candidates don’t always meet every listed qualification. If the role sounds like you and you believe you can make a meaningful contribution, we’d like to hear from you.
